Mayor Pollard Resigns From Mayors Against Illegal Guns

by lewwaters

Across the blogosphere word has been coming out of Vancouvers Mayor Royce Pollard joining the ant-gun group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

Some have insinuated that he recently joined in an effort to gain valuable votes from anti-gun voters in Vancouver. Others labeled him as anti-gun.

I emailed the Mayor last evening questioning him on his membership in this group,

Hello Mayor Pollard,

As a fellow US Army Viet Nam Veteran (C Troop 7/17th Air Cav, 69 -71), I am interested in your position on gun control and second amendment considering your membership in Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

Some are saying you only recently joined the group, to draw votes from the left, but I found your name listed on a May 2008 letter to Congress telling me that is not the case.

Since there are only a few Mayors in Washington that belong to this group, may I ask what interested you in it?

I looked over your campaign site and see no mention of gun control or the second amendment.

While we are all interested in gun safety and lowering crime, I’d appreciate knowing your position on gun control and the second amendment.

Thank you,

Lew Waters
Vancouver , Wa .

Today I received in reply a copy of his letter of resignation from the group.

I became a member of Mayor’s Against Illegal Guns based on my belief that this group would help in the fight against criminal gun use. After all, who isn’t for making our communities safer by getting illegal guns off the streets and out of the hands of the wrong people? After careful consideration and after listening to the concerns of many of my constituents I have come to the conclusion that some of your organization’s statements and actions can be construed as infringing on the rights of legitimate gun owners. Because of this, I request that you remove my name from your web site and from your membership lists.

As a lifetime gun owner and user and as a 27-year veteran of the U.S. Army, I strongly value our constitutional right to bear arms and would never support anything that restricts that right. Please know that while I am withdrawing my membership from your organization, I will continue to work with our local law enforcement officials on the problem of criminals illegally obtaining and using guns to commit crimes.

America’s Vancouver

I congratulate Mayor Pollard for resigning from such an association that masks their true intent and thank him for standing up for our second amendment rights.

  1. Pretty clear statement by the Mayor.

  2. Yes it is, Pat. That is why I said to him “I congratulate Mayor Pollard for resigning from such an association that masks their true intent and thank him for standing up for our second amendment rights” here and also replied much the same in email.

Will it be enough to see re-election?

    Don’t know.

I don’t get to vote for the Mayor, not yet anyways, so I am not actually backing anybody.

  3. Royce Pollard is a through & through Democrat LIBERAL!
Have we already forgotten his communication with an Alaskan glazier promted by HUMAN CAUSED global warming:

“Pollard, who in 2005 was among 358 mayors to sign the U.S. Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement, attended a mayors summit on climate change in Alaska last year.
“I saw for myself the results of warmer temperatures on the glaciers,” Pollard said. “I even communicated with a glacier. . . . I did put my hand on the glacier. And the glacier said to me, ‘Mayor of America’s Vancouver, I’m melting. I’m melting. I’m melting, help me. . . . ”

Further, how can anyone JOIN a group titled ‘MAYORS AGAINST ILLEGAL GUNS’ without knowing what their bottom line is??
    Comon folks.

  4. Mallory, looking over the MAIG site, it seems other Mayors are leaving it too. The name disguises Bloomberg’s real intent, elimination of guns, which we all know would only be for honest law-abiding citizens.

Should he have checked them out more before joining? Yes, I think.

That being said, I hope his resignation is sincere and not just to get a few more votes.

    Liberal? Obviously so.

Sadly, too many labeling themselves Republican seem to be too nowadays.

Please don’t think this post is in support of Pollard, it is just acknowledgement of his resignation.

Outside the city limits as I am, I get no vote and am endorsing no one.
