Pridemore Drops Out

by lewwaters

Many were surprised to hear this afternoon that Washington State Democrat Senator, Craig Pridemore ended his bid to replace retiring Brian Baird, the current Democrat in his 6th term as Washington 3rd Congressional District.

That he threw his support behind opponent Denny Heck comes as no surprise.

First word of Pridemore ending his bid came from Progressive Horsesass Blog, followed shortly by an article appearing at the Columbian’s website.

Pridemore, much like Republican Jaime Herrera, entered the race shortly after Baird announced his retirement. Heck did not enter until the race until January, quickly outpacing Pridemore in fund raising, even without injecting hundreds of thousands of his own money into his campaign.

Pridemore, in his second term as State Senator has been a controversial figure, speaking out against taxing lower income people, yet casting the deciding vote for a bill that did just that in 2005. He is also known for gerrymandering a small district to vote for acceptance of Light Rail being extended from Portland to Vancouver, against the wishes of the majority of Clark County citizens who voted it down by a 2 to 1 margin a few years ago.

Pridemore, like many Democrats has steadily voted to increases taxes on Washington citizens, falsely believing raising taxes during a deep recession will somehow alleviate the pain and suffering of taxpayers, seeing the wealthy class as an endless supply of monies to fund their pet programs.

Speaking of the extra long special legislative session this year, which gave us a whole new slate of taxes placed on the backs of lower income earners, Pridemore told the Columbian the session, “placed our campaign at a clear disadvantage.”

Pridemore’s withdrawal comes just weeks after blasting opponent, Denny Heck over the ill-advised and controversial “Employee Free Choice Act.”

Just days ago, Pridemore was blasting Heck over his not having a clearly defined Issues Page up on his website. This, after embarrassing himself by stating to Seattle based Publicola that he’s ahead of Heck, even though he would not produce any such poll to back up his claim.

Asked by the Columbian’s Kathie Durbin about the poll, Pridemore could only say, It was all off the record.

Now, in endorsing Heck he states, “Denny is a bright, hard working and authentic Southwest Washington leader and we need his broad experience working for us in Congress.”

Don’t you just love politicians?

I have long presumed Denny Heck will win the nomination for the Democrat side seeing Pridemore never stood a chance. This means we will need a strong Republican candidate to go toe to toe with him after the primaries in August.

The two top runners for the GOP remain David Castillo of Olympia and Camas’s Jaime Herrera, who severely lacks a clear and coherent understanding of many of the issues we face in the 3rd Congressional District and as a nation.

My money remains on David Castillo, if Republicans wish any hope of winning this election.

Craig Pridemore will be returning to the State Senate representing the 49th Legislative District. Hopefully, voters in the 49th will wake-up and send this tax & spend Democrat packing when he is next up for reelection.

UPDATE: Showing the epitome of an attitude of “anointed” to the nomination, if not seat, Jaime Herrera’s campaign manager, Casey Bowman, issued a statement to Seattle based Publicola on Pridemore’s withdrawal.

He said, “We welcome the campaign against Denny Heck. He’s been part of the establishment since before Jaime was born.”

Casey, before you begin campaigning against Heck, perhaps Jaime should actually win the nomination? She still has 3 GOP opponents to get past, any one of which gives clearer positions on issues than she does.

Then again, why make such a remark about Heck being “part of the establishment” when Jaime is also “part of the establishment?”

Bowman also said, “at least Craig Pridemore was clear on where he stood. Heck’s been less clear, voters are going to have tougher choice there in supporting someone who’s been a little more vague.”

Uh, does he not realize his words describe Jaime Herrera to a “T?”

Evil Visits Vancouver

by lewwaters

As announced previously, the Westboro miscreants showed up outside of Heritage High School today to spread their message of hate against Gays and America’s Veterans. 7 of their number walked from a single SUV parked away from where some 300 counter-protesters parked.

The Columbian posted an initial report on their website shortly after the “event” disbanded, Rallies at Heritage High draw hundreds

Counter-protesters standing across the street easily drowned out any chants or words the 7 misguided cretins may have been trying to say.

All sorts of people showed up to counter-protest. Gays, straights, male, female, young, old, Black, White, all gathered in opposition to these hate mongers who pervert scripture to justify their hatred. State Representative Jim Moeller and his campaign manager joined with the counter-protesters in letting all know we in Vancouver do not appreciate such visits by such people.

Home made signs scattered the east side of the street expressing opposition while the Westboro ilk carried professional signs and wrapped themselves in upside down American flags, one looking bloodied with another dragging the American flag down the sidewalk on the west side of the street.

Westboro has been staging such demonstrations as “God Hates Fags” for several years, beginning in their hometown of Topeka, Kansas. The group claims to have staged over 41,000 protests in over 650 cities since 1991, at accost of some $250,000 a year.

Largely ignored for many years, the group added protesting at funerals of Soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice after the War on Terror began, incurring the wrath of thousands of Veterans nationwide as well as families of the fallen. Their message of hate still directed against Gays, they charge God Hates America’s soldiers due to Gays within America.

Many call for ignoring these fools and while there is merit in that claim, their changing how they protested shows me that ignoring them just brings escalation in their protests. Fortunately for them, we are no longer in the 19th century where such actions would have resulted in tar & feathering or lynching.

Most telling during today’s “event,” was after the day beginning clear, it began raining just before they showed up. Compared to the weather during Memorial Day Ceremonies, a day that began raining and cleared up during the ceremony, it is obvious that at least Mother Nature does not support their message of hate.

It is unknown exactly why Heritage High was targeted, but some presume it is due to school’s having a Gay-Straight Alliance club.

Clark County Sheriff’s Deputies closed both ends of NE 130th Avenue in front of Heritage High and did a great job of keeping both side separated, not that the cowards from Westboro, who requested Police protection prior to arriving, would try to mingle with some 300 counter-protesters.

In all, it shows that the various factions present in Clark County can set aside differences and join together to counter real hate.
