Jon Russell Resigns From Washougal City Council

by lewwaters

Not really a big surprise, but Washougal City Council Member Jon Russell has announced he will resign his council seat effective July 1, 2012.

In an email sent out, Russell says,

“I am submitting my resignation from the Washougal City Council, effective July 1st 2012. I have accepted a job promotion which will take my family and me to the east coast. Please thank the city employees for their tireless dedication and their assistance to me as a City Councilman. Washougal is a great city and will only get better in the years to come. My last Council meeting will be June 25th.

On a personal note, thank you for your integrity and diligence in making our city run smoothly.

Washougal City Councilman

The Columbian’s account says that Russell intends to become the Students for Life of America national coordinator in Manassas, Va. Russell has served as the nonprofit organization’s regional director recently.

Russell has been a noted figure in local politics, running for various offices but only winning in the Washougal City Council. He has ran unsuccessfully for the 3rd Congressional District and when Jaime Herrera Beutler threw her hat in the ring in 2010, drawing away what little support he had, he tried unsuccessfully to replace her as one of the 18th legislative district representatives, a seat easily won by Ann Rivers.

Russell will be remembered for undermining the reelection efforts of past Washougal Mayor Stacee Sellers, as he absolved himself of any responsibility for an alleged missing $100,000, even though he chaired the council’s finance committee and signed off on expenditures. No charges were ever filed and the effort did not help propel Russell into higher office, as it appeared he had hoped it would.

I can only wish Students for Life of America good luck.

  1. Hopefully, he won’t come back.

    Surely, he won’t be missed.

  2. Lew, I hate it when you get all weepy….

  3. Bob – I don’t think he was being weepy. I think he was wishing the new organization that Jon was going to the BEST! 🙂 Because if anyone knows better, there IS an online paper trail that will follow him…..

  4. A few times I provided input to the Washougal City Council on issues that affect Camas and Washougal. Jon Russell was a good city councilor who actually listened to citizens, kept traffic circles off of hiway 14, fees down, and a lot of other good. He will be missed by many.

  5. Can we have our $100,000 back now?

  6. Oops, sorry Lew. That last one that is pamela99 is actually me. Once again, I was trying to do something for my wife at the same time….my bad.
