Endless Summer Cruise-In to Benefit Veterans Court

by lewwaters

As we face the eve of the 11th remembrance of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack, we must also remember that we still have troops in harm’s way, fighting those who would repeat that horrific day, given the chance.

Those troops will be returning to us one day, some after multiple tours, each having experienced their own horror of war and trying to put the war behind them and just get on with life. Most will adjust with little effort, but a few will have problems.

Some will have minor scrapes with the law and that is where our Clark County Veterans Court comes in. It was founded to remove those few from the system and divert them into counseling or mentoring with other Veterans to give them a chance to ‘unwind’ and not be locked up and forgotten or end up committing suicide as far too many of our heroes have done over the years.

Although much of the court’s initial costs are covered by a $350,000 federal grant, donations are needed to provide Veterans with things like transportation and phones so they can stay connected with their mentors.

To accomplish that task, The Veterans Court founding presiding Judge, Judge Darvin Zimmerman, has been organizing a series of FREE ‘Cruise-Ins and Concerts’ that have so far met about two thirds of the court’s needs.

The Columbian provided coverage of the last concert, held in Esther Short Park August 19 here.

If you somehow missed out on the opportunity to attend one of the previous events and help our Veterans, you’re in luck. Another ‘Cruise-In’ is scheduled for Saturday, September 15, 2012 9 AM to 4 PM at Jett Burger Café, 3531 SE 2nd Ave, Camas, Washington 98607 (360 335 1430).

As delivered in past events, “it will be a fantastic event with great cars and great music all provided free,” said Judge Zimmerman.

A facebook album of cars participating at Esther Short Park may be viewed here.

If you wish to show your own classic car or custom, Judge Zimmerman adds, “pre-registration is available by calling (360) 335-1430 and $5 of the $10 registration goes to the Vets Court Board, a 501(c) 3 non-profit. The event will include Dash Plaques for the first 50 entries and there will be lots of trophies.”

The feature vehicle will be a fully restored English Double Decker Bus fitted out as a roaming restaurant, or as owner Phil Verry calls it, a “Bustaraunt.”

Along with a great many show quality cars, the day promises great entertainment again featuring Mark Stevenz, a great Elvis impersonator

Also featured will be Tony Morretti singing a tribute to Frank Sinatra.

Filling out the line-up of entertainment will be singer Petya Grozeva, who gave a fantastic performance at Esther Short Park, Country Sensation Ricky Lee Jackson and Karen Overton of Portland’s Pleyback, all Free to the public.

I hope you all will take advantage of this free event, enjoy some great entertainment, experience Jett Burger Café’s Hawaiian Burger and above all, leave a donation to help our Veterans Court help our deserving Veterans.

They have done so much for us, it is the least we can do for them.
