Tax Increases, Affordable Housing, What About Jobs?

by lewwaters

Ho Bo 2We all realize there is a homeless population in our community. A population that for any number of reasons, seems to have grown over the last couple years. Along with that growth comes the problem of how do we deal with them.

Once was the time they were referred to as bums, ho bo’s, vagrants, derelicts, tramps and such and communities did their best to usher them away. A kinder term from years ago was a drifter. From what I have read it seemed to peak during the years of the Great Depression, but has been around for all time.

But times have changed and now they are seen as “homeless,” people simply down on their luck, pushed out of jobs by greedy corporations, landlords or just the economic times as we continue struggling to climb out of the Great Recession that started about 9 years ago.

Are We Past The Point of No Return?

by lewwaters

Wile E. Coyote Hate GOPIt seems to be a saying widely disseminated today, being past the point of no return. We hear it in relation to climate change, economical woe and much more.

But where it may be more truthful than anywhere else is in our political discourse, both nationally and locally.

It seems that although our political discourse has been brutal at times since our country was founded, it took on a new level of vitriol beginning with the announcement of George W. Bush winning the 2000 presidential election, with the false cries of “he stole the election” heard ever since.

Rep. Wylie & Sen. Cleveland on “That Bridge”

by lewwaters

An excerpt from the Feb 23, 2016 tele-town hall convened by Rep Sharon Wylie (D. 49) and Sen. Annette Cleveland (D. 49) responding to a constituent question concerning “That Bridge.”

Of note is how both craftily avoided using the words “light rail” since the effort to force light rail on the community against our wishes is what forced the bloated boondoggle into a comatose state.

Now That the Shoe is on the Other Foot

by lewwaters

Madore, Stuart SneeringI recall the quick animosity that developed and that we all saw very soon after David Madore was sworn in, along with Tom Mielke after the 2012 elections. We saw how for many years, Mielke was the lone voice of conservatism on the County Commission, often sidelined by the votes of Democrat Steve Stuart and Marc Boldt, allegedly a Republican.

We all grew tired of the one-sided votes and after funding candidates previously that didn’t win, Madore ran himself in the 2012 election and won.

That relegated Stuart to the lone Liberal on the County Commission and as expected that did not set well with him after so many years of calling the shots.

Updated: Deny, Deny, Deny, but Stack the Deck

by lewwaters

It seems the very instant anyone brings up mention of the comatose CRC light rail project or even light rail itself, they are quickly deluged with denials and ridicule over it with the usual call of the project is dead and buried and we will not see a new bridge over the Columbia River for at least a generation.

We see comments from C3G2 as, “THE SKY IS FALLING! AKA, THE OREGON-ONLY CRC IS BACK! (….not)” in response to observations from an Oregon resident concerning efforts south of the river.

This blog has shown the gradual efforts from our side of the river in calling for a reassessment of transportation needs similar to those seen years ago as the CRC light rail project grew into the bloated boondoggle it promised to become.

Did Madore Claim a New Bridge in 5 Years?

by lewwaters

Since early 2014, the Lazy C and Democrats have claimed Councilor Madore said we would have a new East County Bridge in 5 years. He recently claimed that has been a “misrepresentation” of what was originally said.

To set the record straight, let’s look at what was said and you can make up your own mind about it.

Rep. Harris Responds to Bullying Tactic

by lewwaters

After receiving a threatening letter from Christian Berrigan, State Committeeman for the Clark County Washington Republican Party, of withholding support in any reelection bid if he attended the Republicans of Clark County event, Rep. Paul Harris (17th) responded while attending the ROCC Ronald Reagan Birthday Celebration Dinner on February 6, 2016 in Vancouver, Washington at the Heathman Lodge.

I can’t think it is anything but downright silly to try to bully candidates to not campaign before certain groups of people because you might not like that group. After all, that is what political candidates do.

Ronald Reagan Birthday Celebration

by lewwaters

Highlights from the Republicans of Clark County Ronald Reagan Birthday Celebration held at the Heathman Lodge in Vancouver, Washington, February 6, 2016.

In all, the event was well attended with some very good candidates speaking their positions. Meeting Bill Bryant, candidate for Governor of Washington State shows conservatives have the best chance of winning the Governor’s office for the first time in decades.

Herrera Beutler Sets Leavitt Straight on Pike and I-5

by lewwaters

Herrera Smile 2As we all know, Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt ran for his first term on numerous promises to fight against tolling the now comatose CRC light rail project, flipping his position soon after defeating incumbent Royce Pollard. The flip left Pollard to state in a radio interview, “I want to puke.”

Pollard went on to say that Leavitt had “duped the citizens of America’s Vancouver” and that he had “checked his honesty and integrity at the door somewhere way back down the line … people bought that bull … this was a campaign based on a lie.”

In his 2013 bid for reelection, all was forgiven by the Lazy C editor, Lefty Lou Brancaccio when Leavitt merely admitted to him in an interview, “I was wrong.”

Lefty Lou and C3G2’s Overblown Jubilation

by lewwaters

Benton, Columbian Hate HeadlineFrom the excitement and gleeful comments both under Lazy C articles and over on C3G2 concerning State Senator Don Benton’s announcement that he will not seek a 6th term, you might believe the man simply evaporated from the face of the earth, instead of just announcing not seeking another term.

Lefty Lou Brancaccio is predictably beside himself as he penned a special Press Talk editorial today, Monday February 1, 2016, the announcement coming out after his usual Saturday smearing of those “M&M Boys” or Benton.
