Return to “New Normal”

by lewwaters

Does the recent talk of a “new normal” give you an uneasy feeling deep in the pit of your stomach? Well, it should since through most of the 8 years of the Obama administration we were continually told how higher unemployment, fewer jobs, stagnant economic growth and of course, increased dependency on government for our day to day survival was to be accepted as “the New Normal.”

But it didn’t happen as the left expected. No, over the last three years our country thrived with the highest stock market gains ever, lowest unemployment in decades, astronomical job growth and fewer people relying on government assistance.

That is, until claiming the need to stop the spread of this Coronavirus, governors across the country declared emergencies, issued ‘stay at home orders’ closing many businesses deemed “non-essential,’ closed parks, issued “social distancing orders,” and again forcing people back to reliance on government programs and payments to feed and care for their families.

Once again, we’re right back to “the New Normal,” even to proclaiming it such by the media and others. They didn’t even bother to rename it, just once again claim it as this “New Normal” that was rejected and countered with the election of Donald Trump in 2016.

To be up front, I did not support Trump in 2016, but didn’t support his opponent, Hillary Clinton. In fact, my claim at the time was “the two worst candidates in our history.” Unlike others, though, I didn’t feel the need to ‘flip out’ over the results and since Trump won, admitted he was entitled to govern, succeeding or falling on his face, as all before him were granted.

Admittedly my assessment wasn’t accurate and even though I still have issues with the man, we were heading towards a much improved country, even though there was little to no cooperation from Democrats as all they could do was seek impeachment to have him ousted from office. As we know, they succeeded in a highly partisan impeachment passed that was rejected in the Senate.

Things were looking really good for the U.S. and even the world, up until the Coronavirus hit and maximum effort resulted in a near complete shut-down of the country, pushing us right back towards economic uncertainty of the Obama years.

A Sept. 29, 2012 New York Times article informed us,

“a slim majority of Americans now say they define getting ahead as not falling behind — not losing ground or falling into debt — rather than the more traditional definition of enjoying steady increases in pay and income.”

A June 12, 2014 American Economic Institute article quoted Obama Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew saying,

“the US GDP growth rate, adjusted for inflation, is now projected to run a little above 2% a year. That would be a significant downshift from the 3.4% average growth rate from the end of World War II until 2007.”

Forbes let us know, in an Jan 14, 2014 article titled Obama’s Unemployment ‘New Normal’ Foretells A ‘Lost Decade’, pertaining to an effort to paint a rosy picture of the then lagging economy,

“A quick look at the BLS Household Survey showed that, rather than being bad, December was actually a better-than-average month in President Obama’s ‘new normal’ economy. This is not a huge accomplishment, given that ‘Obama’s new normal’ comprises slow GDP growth, a stagnant jobs market, and falling real household incomes.” (Emphasis added)

In the waning days of the Obama administration, a July 8, 2016 Washington Post column, Is anemic growth the new normal? quoted James Bullard, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis,

“The grim news is not that the economy continues to resist returning to normal. Rather, it is that this ‘current equilibrium’ is the new normal. If 2 percent growth is ‘the most likely scenario’ for the foreseeable future, the nation faces a second consecutive lost decade — one without a year of 3 percent growth.”

Suffice it to say, we saw through the efforts to convince us how much better off we were under the economic oppression offered by Obama’s “New Normal”

However, even though a serious outbreak, this COVID-19 virus appears to be being used to stall out our economic progress, plunging us right back to the misery we escaped from by the 2016 election.

With “stay at home orders” issued by governors, citizens arrested for playing tee ball with their child or taking them to a park or just being alone outdoors at the beach. Paychecks drying up as businesses are closed, not meeting the government’s level of what they deem “essential,” and forcing people onto government assistance in order to care for themselves and their families.

While it might feel nice to receive a check from the government, never forget that the money was first taken away from someone else. And with so many businesses closures and rapidly increasing unemployment, government is receiving far less revenue, forcing them to borrow even more from somewhere or somebody in order to continue sending out those checks.

And now, as eastern and central states are easing up on their restrictions, west coast governors are extending their orders of stay at home, even though several citizens have formed rallies in protest around the state and at the capital.

Make no mistake, “New Normal” is nothing more than government dependence and oppression in the long run and is not what we need.

What we really need is for government to get out of our way and let us work and restore the nation to what it has always been destined to be, a Great Country with a free people.

After all, it wasn’t government that built this nation, but the people embracing their freedom to create, grow and thrive.

Let’s not throw it all away due to fearmongering by government.

  1. Many Americans have become “go along to get along” donkeys…..easily led, fearful of their “owners”, lacking courage to do what is right. It is so sad, because when we were kids in Shelton growing up (I am 72 years old), it was not like this. You had a local school board meeting and in a town of 7000, 1000 showed up and they were loud and proud of being Americans. Now the little logging town near Olympia is awash in illegals and crime, and the fear factor is huge!! Not right people!!! A few loud mouth know it alls in our faces need to be countered with polite but firm push back with truth from THE MAJORITY OF DECENT AMERICANS who want peace, not chaos, cleanliness of mind, heart and community where kids can grow up safe and responsible. Fight for your lives people, because those who hate America and God are coming for us!!!!! Cindy Z in Spokane

  2. Back in our day (we’re really close in age) people were willing to stand up for what is right. Then came the “better Red than Dead” morons that were all too willing to just roll over and live their lives in fear.

The problem there was they got into office and now force us to live within their fears.

What’s going on today is not “normal” and never should be allowed to become “normal.”

  3. The biggest change I see in America since I grew up 50 years ago in the little town of Shelton near Olympia–other than the logging industry that fed that little town was needlessly destroyed by left wing Marxist-socialist haters of small, conservative communities–is the level of community involvement in the life of our neighborhoods!!! Hardly anybody knows anybody nextdoor anymore!! Most didn’t have much in the way of wealth in those days, but we by and large valued our families and were proud of being Americans. And we talked a lot. We visted over the fence. We showed up at school board meetings en masse, and we voted!! Since Marxist-socialists got control of our schools and media, anti-American and anti-family rhetoric has been none stop. When I say “got control” I do not mean “got the majority”. The clever, nasty leftists like Chicago organzier Saul Alinsky, have done all this with a very small, committed, vocal minority that worked together and “show up”. In the sixties when I went to WSU, and these types were all over the place from California, they suddenly were in our faces 24/7–aggressive, loud and proud. They blockaded the book store just to be intimidating, and would not let anyone in, and it took hours for the campus police to realize what was going on and ask them to move on. Some of these students came to campus from San Francisco with knives and zip guns in their shoes!!! We were flummoxed!! When the Ag. House was finally attacked and the roof and walls blown out by shot gun blasts, so that it had to be torn down, the rest of us were just plain terrified. This lawless aggressiveness has continued to this day in many forms, and it MUST BE COUNTERED by active resistance by courageous citizens. We need to get more hard working, brave patriots citizens like Rep. Dan Griffey elected, but it won’t be easy with the massive funds the lefties now have at their disposal to buy lots of paid help! We can only overcome them at the local level with people, and lots of them!! (Griffey had to run for office three times before he could get his message out and overcome his oppostion.) Let’s get busy people. Back up those who believe in obeying the Constitutional laws of this state, honoring motherhood and veterans, and who love to picnic with their neighbors serving homemade apple pie and meat–“born, raised and harvested” in the U.S.!!!!! 6. What you describe has been the reasoning behind this blog since I started it years ago. My effort was to give a reasoned view of what was happening and if possible, a viable alternative.

Sad that the main opposition to my efforts was the Clark County Republican Party, some of whom today call for ousting incumbent Republicans by voting for Democrats.

  7. I agree 100% with zapox6 reply. The socialist leftist have acquired the democratic party. The democrats themselves realize this, however, they are blinded by their thirst for power which makes their going along with the socialist plan even worse. Unfortunately for them it will have a large and lasting affect on the democratic party from which they will most likely never recover. The democrats and their support system, the “media” are using this pandemic as a way to control the people through fear, all the while telling the people to give up their rights. The democratic socialist requirement of a vaccine before completely opening up the country is uncalled for, previous pandemics were never solved by a vaccine, polio, SARS, H1N1, etc. still claim lives every year.
How far off can numbers be , Example: The H1N1 influenza pandemic of 2009 is thought to have infected 11–21% of the world’s population. It resulted in between “151,000 and 575,400” deaths, a difference of 400,000 ??
The fourth-ever PHEIC was declared in response to a widespread epidemic of Zika fever, caused by the eponymous virus, in “Brazil”. The epidemic began in early 2015 and spread to other parts of South America, as well as several islands in the Pacific and Southeast Asia. ( It took a year for the WHO to declared a global health emergency in February 2016 ).
As for the Clark County Republican Party, they need to support fellow republicans, this tit for tat like 3 year old kids indicates a lack of brains. If they vote for democrats while asking we vote republican, they are part of the problem.
