Son of CRC

by lewwaters

I have stated all along that the failed CRC (Columbia River Crossing light rail project) wasn’t “dead,” but in a politically induced coma. And while the latest effort to “begin a discussion or process” is claimed to not be about resurrecting the failed CRC, the following short clip of Rep. Sharon Wylie (D. 49) speaking in support of HB 2095 indicates to me that the end goal is a resurrection, either in whole or part.

Full floor debate

Due to several circumstances, Clark County Conservative will maintain a neutral stance on this as it moves forward. I am told by many self professed better than me’s that they have it handled, so I defer it to them.

What Killed the CRC?

by lewwaters

CRC TombstoneInteresting to see KGW 8 publishing yet another article on the comatose CRC, 8 things that wrecked the new I-5 bridge with the usual calls and blame of what they feel brought the project down.

Listed are 1. Washington Legislators; 2. Transit; 3. Extras; 4. Tolls; 5. Finances; 6. Bridge Design; 7. ODOT and 8. Oregon legislators.

I can’t argue that each played a role in seeing the project closed down.

But ultimately, one thing is primarily to blame and that is the project never had the support of citizens north of the river, in Clark County.

CRC Dead? Or Just In A Coma, Again?

by lewwaters

I-5 Bridge 02I can’t say it is unexpected, given strong citizen opposition and poor support in the Oregon legislature, but news is out that Oregon Governor Kitzhaber’s Sunday, March 9 deadline for funding an “Oregon Only” CRC plan to ram their financially failing light rail onto Clark County will see the demise of the project, again.

We heard this before, though. Just last year the Washington Senate failed to bring a funding measure to the floor, effectively ending Washington State’s involvement in the boondoggle.

But special interests hell bent on forcing light rail across the Columbia River, thereby enhancing their bank accounts, revived the project under an ill-advised “Oregon Only” plan, where the state of Oregon appeared to take on construction by themselves and funding to be placed on the backs of Clark County commuters with expensive tolling.

About the Inevitable CRC Cost Overruns

by lewwaters

Still think Oregon will pay for any cost overruns associated with the CRC light rail boondoggle?

Oregon State Democrat Senator Michael Dembrow is letting you know, Clark County commuters, that you will be paying for whatever it is Oregon wants.

His cavalier attitude rivals the cluelessness of Washington State Democrat State Senator Annette Cleveland as she expressed the evening of Feb 19, 2014 during the tele-town hall held with constituents of the 49th legislative district.

I’d post the audio, but I guess you’ll have to wait for the Lazy C to post it since that is the preferred source of information.

Economist warns: Renewed CRC Promises Gridlock on I-205

by lewwaters

I-5 Bridge 02Joe Cortright is President and principal economist for Impresa, a Portland consulting firm specializing in regional economic analysis, innovation and industry clusters. Joe is also a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and senior policy advisor for CEOs for Cities, a national organization of urban leaders.

An Economist with impeccable credentials that when he releases a study, we are assured it is well researched, deeply considered and very relevant to the subject at hand. As an old commercial said, he is one that when he speaks, people listen. Or at least, they should.

Mr. Cortright has deeply researched and released studies critical of the Columbia River Crossing light rail project and has grabbed our attention for his efforts. And as we now know, the once thought dead project is being brought back up with allegedly new considerations, but realistically, just the same old, same old we have rejected.

Benton Pushes Back on “Oregon Only” CRC/Light Rail (UPDATED)

by lewwaters
Senator Don Benton

Senator Don Benton

Once more we see a prime example of why Senator Don Benton (R. 17th) is maybe the single most hated person in office by the Lazy C, he continues to stand up for the struggling middle class taxpayer over special interests like Identity Clark County and the rest of those hoping to straddle that same struggling middle class family with higher taxes, fees and tolls to pay for an extension of Portland’s financially troubled light rail into Vancouver.

As we know, the CRC was declared dead, but like a monster rising from the ashes, powers that be are trying to breathe new life into it, calling for wasting more tax dollars and forcing the community to accept a bloated transportation project that they refuse to let the community vote on, knowing that it will likely fail, as it did before.

Oregon Governor Kitzhaber is behind pushing what he refers to as an “Oregon Only” approach with Clark County commuters being straddled with the expense through tolls and fares for those forced to ride light rail into jobs in Portland, once C-Tran reduces bus service to meet the requirements of light rail.

It’s Alive, the Undead CRC

by lewwaters

Back from the Dead, like an old horror flick sequel, the monster we hoped was dead rises from the grave to once again taunt and torment taxpayers in Southwest Washington and Northern Oregon.

The Columbia River Crossing light rail project roars back to life as special downtown mafia interests quietly plotted against rejoicing taxpayers to give rebirth to the mega-project destined to bankrupt the middle class taxpayer in Clark County, Washington with ever increasing gasoline taxes, license fees, tolls and whatever other means they can dream up to force the struggling middle class to accept the burden of extending Portland’s ill-fated light rail a short distance cross state lines into our community.

CRC: Trying to Suck The Last Bit of Blood Out of Taxpayers?

by lewwaters

CRCWe were all elated this weekend to see the legislature second special session come to a close with the massive $10 Billion Transportation package Gov. Inslee wanted killed, ending over a decade of confrontations locally over the Columbia River Crossing light rail project.

While we were elated, some elected officials that fought so hard to bamboozle voters and force us into accepting the project against our will are very upset. One in particular, Jim ‘sue your constituents to invalidate their votes’ Moeller (D. Portland/Vancouver) is mad as wet hen, throwing hissy fits worse than any spoiled child I have ever seen.

Moeller has been throwing the fingers of blame everywhere this weekend, except of course where it belongs, right back at him since he did everything short of hiring hit men to take our major opponents of the project in trying to sell a bad project to benefit the city south of us in another state.

He lied, misrepresented, tried to bully, ridiculed, mocked, distorted claims and completely ignored any voice of reason in opposition and that alone was enough to cause many to push back even harder.

CRC & $10 Billion Trans Package Taken Off Life-Support

by lewwaters

I-5 Bridge 02The second special session ended shortly after 6 PM, June 29, 2013.

All of the whining, crying and gnashing of teeth won’t help now, only divine intervention will breathe any life into the CRC and Inslee’s massive $10 Billion Transportation package to be heaped on the backs of struggling middle class voters across the state with a 10.5¢ gas tax increase and other fee increases to fund it.

The Senate Coalition majority held fast and remained unified today as efforts get some to change their minds failed.

An AP report, Wash. Senate leaders decline $10B transpo plan indicated the final nail in the coffin late this afternoon.

CRC and 10.5¢ Gas Tax Die

by lewwaters

CRC TombstoneGood news out of Olympia, the Senate shelves Inslee & the Democrats $10 Billion Transportation Bill

From an AP News Break: “Washington lawmakers shelved a plan Friday that would have raised the state’s gas tax in order to pay for a series of major transportation projects around the state.”

I urge as many of you as you wish to email a copy of this article to Rep. Jim Moeller and other staunch supporters who have long ignored taxpayers and voters voices.

The Lazy C got around to mentioning it late in the evening, well after other sources had reported it. While they claim that the funding is “likely dead,” a peek at the url reveals they apparently first posted it as  “CRC, Other Transport Projects Imperiled,” trying to give it an appearance of still in play.

We must remain vigilant, though. This will be brought back up in the future, I am sure. Update after the jump

Don’t Accept CRC’s Wooden Nickel

by lewwaters

Wooden NickelOne time or another we have all heard the old adage, “Don’t take any wooden nickels” meaning to be cautious in one’s dealings. The exact origin of the phrase is debated, but we have come to accept a wooden nickel as indicative of something with little or no intrinsic value.

Such is the case with the Columbia River Crossing light rail project to force taxpayers in Clark County Washington to accept a financially ailing light rail extension from Portland, Oregon a very short distance into our community, even though voters have rejected it and all funding measures considered associated with it.

Since the collapse of the bridge over the Skagit River in Mount Vernon, Washington a week ago, proponents of the CRC light rail project have craftily used that collapse to urge swift approval of funding in the Washington State Legislature to ‘get going’ on replacing the aging spans linking Washington State and Oregon, completely ignoring the collapse had nothing to do with the bridge itself and was caused by an over-sized load on a semi-truck striking numerous structural beams holding the bridge section up.

UPDATED: CRC Proponents, Lazy C Not Letting a Good Crisis Go To Waste

by lewwaters

UPDATE: Not shown on the front page of the May 24 Columbian addressing the “collapse,” but admitted in a separate but smaller article online, North Wash. I-5 bridge collapse caused by oversize load. While this is being used to inflame the CRC debate and hammer opponents, not one thing in the CRC plans would have prevented such an accident from happening. And in fact, given the inadequate river clearance of the current design, such an accident is more likely to happen if a ship or barge struck the lower level trying to pass underneath.

Skagit Bridge CollapseSad news to hear of the I-5 Bridge over the Skagit River up in Skagit County collapsing this evening. We pray that early reports of only minor injuries hold up and that no one lost their life.

A bridge collapse is never good news and must be taken seriously, given that we depend on these bridges to travel to and fro.

But, knee-jerk reactions to further a political agenda or justify bankrupting middle class taxpayers must be stood up to and not allowed to sway emotions to vote to increase taxes where they are not needed.

Within minutes of the news of the bridge collapsing the Lazy C had their article up, complete with their spin of information used to justify coercing opponents of the Columbia River Crossing light rail project to cave and cease our opposition, lest it happen here, as they have tried to claim is imminent unless we accept Portland’s financially failing light rail into our community.

Competing CRC Ads – Who Really Has the Majority?

by lewwaters

CRC proponents recently released an ad and Jim Moeller made sure to circulate it throughout the legislature in an effort to convince elected officials in Olympia they were in the majority.

Couv.com has released a more truthful ad featuring numerous citizens expressing why the CRC is a bad deal for Clark County.

Proponents ad may be seen at the Couv.com link above. Take note, those speaking in the pro-ad are all speaking from the exact same script with the editing cut to switch back and forth to say their pre-written message.

Couv.com did not have a written script, we each spoke freely of our views.

Applying the Paul Montague Method of Interpretation to the CRC Poll

by lewwaters

CRC RobberAs first mentioned on the Columbian and this blog in Of Increased Decibels, Cutting Bait and the Four P’s, the much anticipated poll results are in with Editor Lou Brancaccio claiming, “the poll showed slim support for the entire project.”

Of course, given the polling method chosen, targeting certain zip codes where support might be stronger than outlying areas within the county, it is no surprise and actually a result I would expect to show an even larger degree of support.

But is this really how the County feels? Does this interpretation really give the outlook of the majority within in Clark County? Lou Brancaccio seems to think it does. But what if we applied the same logic to this poll that Identity Clark County President Paul Montague applied to the overwhelming defeat of last year’s C-Tran Proposition 1 to increase sales tax to fund light rail operations and maintenance? (Video after jump)

SW Washington to CRC, Please Do Not Resuscitate

by lewwaters

CRC, KnotsFriday, April 12, 2013, a stunning day for all opponents of the Columbia River Crossing filled with enough good news to make Jim Moeller & Tim Leavitt’s head swell up and explode from anguish.

The Columbia River Crossing appears to be in a death roll.

We first read of the actions of the leadership in the State Senate Coalition Majority, who have been pressured all week to roll over and fund $450 Million to be used as Washington’s portion to begin work, calling upon Governor Jay Inslee to convene a fully independent, outside audit of the Columbia River Crossing project.

Music to my ears as I and several others have been making the same call for some time.

CRC Supporters Scurrying Like Cockroaches

by lewwaters

Barking CockroachThis past Sunday, April 3, 2013 saw yet another insulting editorial written by soon to be retiring Columbian Editorial Page Editor, John Laird: We should all live as long as the Third Bridge Cockroach.

Laird, a strong supporter of the Columbia River Crossing has now added “cockroach” to his repertoire of derogatory titles assigned to taxpayers that dare actually look behind the shroud of secrecy long enveloping the CRC and stand against it.

BANANA (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything), Ankle Biters, Hounds of Whinerville, NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard), CAVE (Citizens Against Virtually Everything) and now Cockroaches to describe those who they also want to buy their newspaper.
