Just What Is a “Real Republican?”

by lewwaters

Elephant 3Since the Clark County Republican Party took their suicidal plunge towards irrelevancy this past Saturday, I now see increasing comments regarding “Real Republicans,” indicating Republican candidates and incumbents such as candidate for County Council District 3 John Blom, incumbent 18th Legislative District State Senator Ann Rivers and incumbent 3rd Congressional District Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler are not “Real Republicans.”

Claims are that this declaration is based upon their voting records in the case of Herrera Beutler and Rivers and that Blom’s votes on the Planning Commission do not reflect those preferred by the leaders of the Clark County Republican Party or outgoing County Councilor, David Madore.

In the case of Blom, Madore showed himself to be an extremely poor loser last evening by labeling Blom and several others as “politicians [that] wage war against citizens and against faithful citizen representatives” and “those falsely campaigning as an R.”

Here Comes ‘Da Taxman’

by lewwaters
Moeller, Spread Watermarked

Jim Moeller

Possibly the worst kept secret in town, long time 49th legislative district representative, Jim Moeller, labeled ‘da taxman’ by this blog due to his love of taxing the middle class (he claims to oppose the B&O tax) has switched his goal from being elected Lt. Governor of our state, as previously announced with his focus now on defeating 3rd Congressional District Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler.

Herrera Beutler, a Republican has held the seat since she was first elected in 2010 after Democrat Brian Baird decided to retire. She has so far held o ff challenges in the primaries from disgruntled Republicans that see her as ‘not pure enough’ and has easily defeated Democrat challengers.

Bedfellows and Frienemies

by lewwaters

PoliticianIt is often said, “politics makes strange bedfellows,” coined by American journalist Charles Dudley Warner in 1829.

Of course, on the opposite end of that is politics destroying friendships as well as being the cause of bitter arguments as was seen with the duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton in 1804 that lead to Hamilton’s death.

In our modern era, though, we do not engage in dueling, but with the onset of politics of personal destruction, opponents seek to destroy each other’s character while trying to hide their own flaws.

In the meantime, lines are drawn between supporters where we all too often witness bitter arguments, denigration of each other, verbal attacks with condescending denigrating attitudes.

Motive Matters

“Proposed changes in county charter could be awful.” Clark County Democrat Party, May 2011

“exploring the idea of a home rule charter would be a wild goose chase, seeking to solve problems that are nonexistent.” Columbian newspaper editorial, June 3, 2013

As seen above, Democrats especially and even the Lazy C have both adamantly opposed any change to how county government functions over the years. Both led campaigns that saw efforts rejected by voters in 1982, 1997, and 2002.

Another effort received little support in 2011, leading the Lazy C to proclaim in a Cheers & Jeers column,

Cheers: To county commissioners for putting an end to the home rule charter process this year. Inspecting methods of government is always a good idea, but there was no demonstrated need to elect a slate of freeholders to, in essence, draft a county charter that would replace the current system.”

Now that Steve Stuart is Bailing

by lewwaters

Clark County CommissionersAs announced, Clark County Commissioner Steve Stuart has been named as the next City manager for the city of Ridgefield, Washington. Stuart previously announced he would not run for reelection this year, very likely having read the tea leaves that his chances for reelection were somewhat remote, at best.

With his leaving office early, if he actually does, the seat becomes vacant and the political party he ran under, Democrats have to present three names to the remaining County Commissioners to select his replacement.

Whoever is selected will finish out Stuarts term in office and likely will run for reelection in this November’s election.

Thoughts on Commissioner Stuart’s Cowardice

by lewwaters
Stuart Sneer 2

Steve Stuart

Reading comments left on County Commissioner Steve Stuart’s announcement of not seeking re-election, you would be led to think somebody real important had died. The Lazy C and supporters of Stuart’s sound more like they are eulogizing than thanking Stuart for his years sitting on the council, furthering their views, even if against the views of a majority in the county.

Stuart was first appointed to the County Commission to replace liberal Democrat Craig Pridemore, who had been elected as State Senator for the 49th legislative district. Stuart joined a Democrat majority on the three member commission along with Betty Sue Morris and Republican Marc Boldt.

His 2010 re-election would have it appear that he would be lone Democrat sitting on the commission as Republican Tom Mielke had won a narrow victory over Democrat Pam Brokaw in 2008 and Republican Marc Boldt had won re-election against Democrat & Vancouver City Council Member Jeanne Harris, but as we all saw, Boldt “moderated” his views and became more aligned with liberal Democrats in his votes with Stuart, leading to his being sanctioned by the local Republican Party and in 2012, slaughtered in his bid for re-election, losing to first time runner David Madore.

Of Chastising and Picking Fights

by lewwaters

Boxer WomenReading Greg Jayne’s column, Clark County Republicans may be picking wrong fight and the reader comments this morning, once again I am left pondering, why is it that only Republicans are expected to be “moderate?” Where is the call for Democrats to move away from the left towards the center?

Jayne opines about the recent Open Letter from the Clark County Republican Party to 3rd Congressional District Congresswoman, Jaime Herrera Beutler and her caving into vote to approve ending the partial government shutdown and approving what appears to be an open-ended raising of the county’s debt limit, essentially doing away with any limit and abdicating congressional authority over the debt to the office of the president.

Jayne correctly notes the abhorrent amount of our national debt and the very likely collapse should we not rein it in.

Doing the Brancaccio Mescolare

by lewwaters

PinocchioThere are times I am left thinking that the most ardent follower of this blog and Clark County Politics blog is none other than Columbian Editor Lou Brancaccio, who although relegates us to a realm of distant obscurity as well as the blame for the local paper of record seeing decreasing subscriptions rates, often targets us in his Saturday Press Talk column.

Such is the case in his latest Saturday column that appears today, Sunday: A fun blog and conspiracies where two thirds of the column is devoted to “correcting” posts earlier this week exposing the papers obvious bias, The Columbian: Busted Again On Their Pro-Democrat Bias on this blog and Remember the democrats lying over Boldt getting booted out of the GOP? over on Clark County Politics where we shed some light on the bias of the Columbian favoring Democrats and a few missing paragraphs in an AP story showing a darker underside of the Democrat Party they claim does not exist.

About an hour after the posts were put up, the missing paragraphs appeared in an updated version of the Columbian’s article as was acknowledged in my earlier post.

Stephanie Rice, Allow Me To Introduce You To Google

by lewwaters

Just about everybody is at least somewhat familiar with the internet today and the availability of ‘search engines,’ Google being amongst the most popular. Regardless of what is used, the internet provides us with a resource of information unlike ever before in our history.

That is why I am very surprised to see the Columbian, primarily Stephanie Rice being so unfamiliar with the prospects of searching for information before just blindly posting a candidates claim of “false” claims from his opponent.

We see the post on the Columbians All politics is local of Tanner calls out Mielke for false statements where yet again, Rice is quick to assail County Commissioner Tom Mielke and latch onto challenger Joe Tanner’s claims of statements made in a political ad by Mielke are “false.”

Had Rice bothered to check Google she would have seen they are not false at all and at worst, may have a wrong word.

Pat Jollota Demeans Decorated Veteran, Not Worthy of ‘First Citizen’

by lewwaters

we have been shocked by the animosity between candidates and parties, and have clucked at the vitriolic name-calling. Wish we could go back to the good old days of gentlemanly behavior.” – Pat Jollota October 14, 2012

A June 29, 2012 Press Release from the Community Foundation announced that former Vancouver City Council member Pat Jollota had been selected as the communities latest “First Citizen,” an honor that elated the entire community and brought her much acclaim for the efforts the community has believed she stood for.

Sadly, it is now revealed by her own hand that she is not deserving of such a distinction and should be stripped of it.

As the quote at the very top of this post indicates, for some time now we all have complained about the level of discourse in the political environment. Yes, it’s always been nasty but once was the time that we came together after the election was over and sought middle ground to better serve all points of view.

Those days disappeared some time ago as the vitriol continues unabated as more and more, we see the attitude of ‘my way or the highway’ take precedence, especially from Democrats always playing ‘victim’ and demanding only their view be heard, heeded or adopted.

Is McKenna Trying To Throw the Election?

by lewwaters

Unbelievable that the more Rob McKenna campaigns for Washington State Governor, the further left his positions are. It’s almost as if he is a secret plant for the campaign of Democrat Jay Inslee.

He has claimed to disagree with homosexual marriage. Then come out against the Boy Scouts of America banning homosexuals from their leadership ranks, ignoring the huge scandal of the early 1990’s where homosexual males had molested young boys over the years.

He fought to ensure homosexual activists received the names, addresses and signatures of everyone who signed the R-71 petition opposing the so called “everything but marriage” domestic partnership law.

Early on he distanced himself from very successful Republican governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker and has stated that Washington State public unions have nothing to fear from him, adding that he feels collective bargaining is their right, even as we in the private sector continue to tighten our belts that they are reluctant to do.

The more we hear from him, the more he sounds like a liberal Democrat, not a conservative Republican.

Does Herrera Beutler Endorse Marc Boldt or Not?

by lewwaters

It was just this past May when Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler raised a few eyebrows around her district over a comment she made and reported in the May 4, 2012 Columbian, the unofficial daily newsletter of the CRC and Democrat Party, that she intended to endorse both incumbent County Commissioners up for reelection, Republican Tom Mielke and alleged Republican Marc Boldt.

Considering that Commissioner Boldt has been sanctioned in November 2011 by the Clark County Republican Party for abandoning the party platform, turning his back on constituents who elected him and began siding with Democrat Steve Stuart, even to the point of saying “nothing would get done if he didn’t compromise with Stuart,” Herrera Beutler began catching flak, just as she predicted she would.

One such example was an open letter written to her by Carolyn Schultz-Rathbun with a copy posted on her blog, Cry Beloved Country.

Arrest Made Over Email Threats Against GOP Candidate (Updated)

by lewwaters

Earlier, I had written a post that I took down, leading some to wonder why I revised it and possibly thinking I was changing information. I said then that the reasons would be revealed shortly. I hope this short post will explain to those who were wondering. The original contained reference to this incident that was premature in releasing on my part as I had mistakenly assumed the man was already arrested.

I received word by phone early this morning that a person, 50 year-old Gary Owen, who had been sending threatening emails to Republican 49th Legislative District candidate Eileen Qutub had been arrested on suspicion of two counts of malicious harassment, a Class C felony.

Owen, obviously not a supporter, indicates extreme anger over receiving a campaign mailer in the mail and instead of just throwing it out, as a sane person would do, sent the following email,

Mielke Draws 2 Challengers, Democrats Continue to Leave Marc Boldt Alone

by lewwaters

Clark County Democrats are once again showing their hand in the next election for the Clark County Commission. It’s no secret they haven’t like that conservative Tom Mielke beat out liberal Pam Brokaw by a small 209 votes in the 2008 election.

Even the Columbian has spared little ink in their efforts to paint Mielke as inept and not worthy of holding office.

In the meantime, even though labeling himself a “Republican,” Marc Boldt comes down on the side of liberal Democrat Steve Stuart often, especially in efforts to ram CRC and light rail from Portland down the throats of Clark County residents, even though we have declined it more than once in the past.

Tom Mielke is the lone voice opposing it on the Commission.

Both Mielke and Boldt are up for reelection this year, but so far, Democrats have fronted 2 challengers, both against Mielke with no challengers against Boldt.

It would appear that having one conservative voice on the commission is more than Democrats can stand as they seem to be content with leaving the more liberal Boldt alone so far.

FLOTUS Excuses Junk Food, When She & BHO Eat It

by lewwaters

Unbelievable, after all of the hype and messages sent out and pushing her “Healthy Kids Initiative,” telling parents what they may or may not feed to their children. First Lady Michelle Obama is defending the choices of junk food chosen for the White House Super Bowl Party, here.

The party menu consisted of “Yuengling Lager and Light, brewed in Pennsylvania, Hinterland Pale Ale and Amber Ale, all the way from Wisconsin. Honey Ale and bratwurst, kielbasa, cheeseburgers, deep-dish pizza and Buffalo wings with sides of German potato salad, twice-baked potatoes and assorted chips and dips.”

Coming under fire for such extravagant junk food, Michelle Obama, defending the choice now says,

“I think I’ve always been very consistent on that front because that’s how I live my life. It’s about balance. It’s always about balance. It’s not realistic to just eat healthy food all the time — especially on Super Bowl Sunday. I don’t even know what you’d have other than some hot dogs and some burgers for a Super Bowl party.”

She goes on to claim it is about “balance,” but where is the balance in her “Healthy Kids Initiative?”

Perhaps she could use a bit more balance herself.

How small were those portions at the White House Super Bowl Party again?

Swastika Vandalism: Ignorance or Hate?

by lewwaters

Spreading across the news is a story out of Lakeville Massachusetts where overnight, vandals carved into a golf course’s green “I Swastika Obama.”

Inexcusable and indefensible, whoever did it, but look closer. It isn’t the Nazi Swastika but the symbol still used by Buddhist’s and Hindu’s in their religion today throughout Asia as a good luck sign.

As can be expected, knee-jerk reactions, with no knowledge of whom or why, blame Republicans as “Nazi’s,” “Rednecks,” “Supremacists” and any other derogatory term one can find to throw at only Republicans.

I am sure any neo-Nazi would know how to draw their hate symbol, but what else could such vandalism represent?

An ignorant uneducated liberal trying to make conservatives look bad?

A supporter of the Dalai Lama giving Obama their symbol of good luck? Doubtful.

My guess is the former.

Are we witnessing steps to America’s Reichstag Fire?

Who Is Stoking Paranoia?

by lewwaters

Sometimes I read a letter in the Columbian’s Letters To The Editors page that is just so over the top I have to respond and point out some obvious projections of the writer.

One such letter appears in the Sunday October 4 edition,

Paranoia stoked by the right

It seems like every time I open the letters to the editor page, I see some drivel from the radical right wing of the Republican Party. Right-wing writers keep trying to define liberals according to their principles. The problem is, the right wing doesn’t have any principles. They still support the Bush administration that almost ruined our nation.

Now we have the argument over reform of our health care system. This is what defines the Republicans perfectly. Our health care system is not breaking — it is already broken and they don’t want to fix it. Never mind the millions of people who have no coverage. The right wing of the Republican Party couldn’t care less.

Racism, Nazi flags at Democratic town halls, the “birthers” who don’t think President Obama is president, and racist cartoons are just a few of the things that defines the Republican Party and their reactionaries. These people prey on the weak-minded and the elderly in suggesting “death panels.” I believe most right-wing Republicans suffer from paranoia and pass it on to people who listen to hacks like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. They have used fear for a decade to fool the American people. Low morals and hypocrisy define the right wing.

Frank Wastradowski

Fortunately for Mr. Wastradowski, freedom of speech gives him the right to be as ignorant and uninformed as he chooses to be. If his name seems familiar, he is the man who cried victim of Hate Crime last year when his car was vandalized, although every other Obama supporter in the neighborhood was left untouched.

From the tone of Wastradowski’s letter, the one with the hate becomes very apparent. Let’s look closer at some of Wastradowski’s claims,

1. Right-wing writers keep trying to define liberals according to their principles. The problem is, the right wing doesn’t have any principles.

Who keeps defining whom? Did he not just write a letter defining Republicans according to his perception?

And, “no principles?” Are we not the ones who want our Immigration laws respected? Are we not the ones who wish to see life preserved and given a chance? Are we not the ones who support fighting those that have been attacking us for three decades?

Study after study has shown that it is those of us he considers “the radical right wing of the Republican Party” that consistently donates more time and money to charity than does the more liberal in our society.

And, we are the ones without principles?

2. They still support the Bush administration that almost ruined our nation.

And, who engaged in 8 years of “fearmongering” to convince everyone that Bush ruined the nation? While we don’t think of Bush as the greatest ever, he did try to do much more than he ever received credit for.

It was Bush who in 2003 tried to head off the fiasco we see in our economy today by reigning in the Fannie Mae Freddie Mac debacle, blocked by prominent Democrats who said there was no building problem then.

There is much he could have done different, but does that excuse our deficit now being raised to more than in our entire history, borrowing billions and billions of dollars from countries that have no love of us?

Does it excuse government taking over control of Wall Street, Banks, the Auto Industry and more?

Isn’t that what communism did?

3. Our health care system is not breaking — it is already broken and they don’t want to fix it. Never mind the millions of people who have no coverage. The right wing of the Republican Party couldn’t care less.

Obviously, it escapes Mr. Wastradowski that many of those without health insurance DON”T WANT IT!” They could afford it but choose to spend their money elsewhere.

And for those who don’t want it, they face possible fines and imprisonment for not purchasing what those like Wastradowski say they must have?

And, “the Republican Party couldn’t care less?”

With all due respect, Mr. Wastradowski, Google HR 3400 and read it. Google how many times Republicans have submitted amendments and ideas in what is supposed to be a “bi-partisan” effort at reforming healthcare and then explain why every single one of the is blocked, denied or dies in committee.

Obviously, to Democrats and Mr. Wastradowski, “bi-partisan” means you must give up your thoughts, ideas and yes, principles and blindly agree to what Democrats want.

4. Racism, Nazi flags at Democratic town halls, the “birthers” who don’t think President Obama is president, and racist cartoons are just a few of the things that defines the Republican Party and their reactionaries.

Aw yes, the old tried and true “race card,” how typical of a radical left-winger.

Democratic townhalls? I thought they were “community” townhalls open to anyone from the community?

Sorry, but I see no waving of nazi flags, but I did see photos of Obama with a Hitler moustache, being held and passed out by members of the Lyndon LaRouche Society, a
left-winged Democratic” group.

Why worry about the so-called “birthers” when the matter could be easily put to rest by simply showing the long form birth certificate, as was demanded of and supplied by John McCain?

Then again, does Mr. Wastradowski refute the “911 Truthers” who still maintain George W. Bush planned and carried out the September 11, 2001 attacks and not the radical Jihadists?

And, racist cartoons? Where was Mr. Wastradowski when Black Republicans were viciously attacked for stepping off the liberal plantation?

Where was he when liberals depicted Michael Steele, chairman of the RNC as a “Simple Sambo” with a blackened minstrel-style face, nappy hair and big, think red lips?

Where was he when Condoleezza Rice was depicted by Democrat cartoonists as an ignorant, barefoot “mammy” saying “I don’t know nothin’ ‘bout birthin’ no babies?”

5. These people prey on the weak-minded and the elderly in suggesting “death panels.”

I recall a time when saying “these people” was considered racist.

But, death panels? Yes, the words were stated and with reason. Perhaps the booklet “Your Life Your Choices” hasn’t made it to Wastradowski’s mail yet.

Perhaps he shut his ears when Obama was making the speech and said words to the effect of “maybe grandma would be better off taking the pain killer instead of getting the surgery.”

What would he label the deep cuts proposed in Medicare and Medicaid in the proposed healthcare bill?

Who is it currently crying thousands are dying in the streets because they have no health insurance? Who makes speeches twisting and distorting stories of mishaps with health insurance?

What does he think of the current proposal of taxing medical devices used primarily by the elderly such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, pace makers, artificial hips and such that cost over $100?

With such a proposal as that, who is really “preying upon the elderly?”

6. I believe most right-wing Republicans suffer from paranoia and pass it on to people who listen to hacks like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. They have used fear for a decade to fool the American people.

Fortunately, there is no law against thinking or believing, not yet.

But using fear? Who kept up for 8 years telling how Bush was destroying the nation? Who for 8 years cried that Bush was causing terrorism? Who for decades now cries about Global Warming/cooling/climate change, whatever the cry is today?

Who is it that keeps crying gloom and doom if we don’t do exactly as they say we should, while they continue a ‘high on the hog’ lifestyle?

Who is it that wants more and more of our paychecks to pay for their luxuries and for us to do without, “to save the planet?”

While many of us don’t really listen much to Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh, it is obvious that Mr. Wastradowski listens too much to the likes of Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and Randi Rhodes.

7. Low morals and hypocrisy define the right wing.

Is that why Duke Cunningham sits in jail while William Jefferson, Barney Frank, Charlie Rangel, John Murtha and more are free?

Is that why Mark Foley and Richard Curtis are no longer in office while Barney Frank and Sam Adams still are?

Is that why liberals are flocking to the defense of Roman Polanski for raping a 13 year-old and fleeing justice for over three decades?

It still bothers me that someone vandalized the Wastradowski’s car last year. I am pleased the community came together to donate to have it repaired. I suppose it never occurred to Mr. Wastradowski that some of those very people he labels as “the radical right wing of the Republican Party” also donated money and quite possibly were some who worked on repairing it.

But, reading this letter and seeing the tone, I wonder now if last years vandalism might not have been somewhat of an inside job?

It must escape Mr. Wastradowski that his party, the Democrats, currently hold not just a majority in the House, but a dominant majority, they have a filibuster proof majority in the Senate and the White House to boot. They have all the cards and yet, somehow, it is the Republicans stopping anything from getting done.

I guess one thing Rush says is right, that even with all the cards and able to push through anything they wish, by themselves without any Republican votes, they only know how to play victim.

It’s always the Republicans fault.

To Mr. Wastradowski I can only say, seek some anger management classes. Just because we disagree with you and Obama doesn’t make us the scum of the earth or the enemy.

If you desire to be lead around like cattle heading off to slaughter by the current administration, go for it, that’s your right.

But many of the rest of us desire to maintain our freedom and liberties.

Liberal Radio Host Wishes Death To Conservative On Air

by lewwaters

Mike Malloy, Liberal Radio Host heard on 620 AM KPOJ in Portland, Oregon shows us how low and the total lack of any class the left has.

In a recent broadcast, Malloy said the following,

I’m not that big of a fan of Beck’s and I’m sure not a fan of Liberal Talk Radio, but hoping anyone commits suicide on TV so it may be rebroadcast on the internet is just way too over the top.

No doubt, had Hannity, Limbaugh or any other conservative radio host said anything even remotely disgusting as this, Democrats in Congress would be screaming their heads off and demanding they be fired.

Say what you want about my friend Victoria Taft, but she has way too much class to ever entertain such a repugnant call.

Little wonder Air America failed if this is the broadcasting they air.

Bloggers, Are We Lobbyists?

by lewwaters

washington-sealPerhaps you think that is a silly question, but currently, the Public Disclosure Commission in Washington State is conducting hearings to determine if we should be required to register and file records as lobbyists in the state of Washington.

PDC Document (pdf file)

The first hearing was held November 12, 2008. Mike Reitz, of the Evergreen Freedom Foundation has been covering this here and here.

I know that we who blog on political matters rarely agree and quite often are at extreme odds with each other, but do you think we are lobbyists?

A lobbyist is a person or group who tries to influence public officials, usually for specific groups or legislation who would gain from passing certain pieces of legislation. We seem to have a love/hate relationship with lobbyists, depending on just what official they are trying to influence on what specific piece of legislation.

While we may express our views in support of or opposition to candidates or legislation to the public who chooses to read our blogs, I do not see this as lobbying. I see it as expressing our views as we are entitled to under the First Amendment of our Constitution.

In a way, we supply Op-Eds and Letters to the Editors that escape editing by the local paper or that never get published. Often, we express a view either counter to what has been published or in support. Occasionally we speak out on a subject that should have been published, but wasn’t.

Look upon it as an Internet Soap Box in the park, but in the comfort of our homes.

Of course, we visit each other’s blogs and sometimes, engage each other, supplying lurkers with a reasoned argument, hopefully, that they will not see anywhere else. Sadly, those discussions all too often break down in ad hominem, but we do supply legitimate citizen debate and discussion without censorship, other than what we bloggers do not allow on our sites.

Should this effort by the Public Disclosure Commission succeed, I see this as a direct infringement on not only my free speech, but yours as well. I disagree with the Liberals all too often, but do not advocate their being silenced.

Bloggers, be you Liberal, Moderate or Conservative, we need to stand together on this one and protect our free speech on the Internet. Government should not be allowed to regulate us or silence us by forcing us to register as lobbyists.

Whatever your political views are, we need to flood Olympia with phone calls, letters and emails expressing our disagreement with this effort. It may very well affect all of us, should they pass it.

They meet again on December 4 to discuss this further. Join me in letting them know we will not stand for our free speech to be denied!
