Oregon Shouldn’t be Given Washington’s 3rd Congressional Seat

It’s no secret that Oregon, Portland primarily has for many years tried to control Clark County Washington while looking down upon us as “Vantucky” and essentially backwater, inbred interlopers muddying their version of Nirvana with our gasoline powered monster cars.

Okay, maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but yes, we all know Portland looks down on Clark County, never hiding their disdain for us, but has shown in the past how much they would love to tap into our revenues on this side of the Columbia River to fund projects and policies they have overextended themselves on.

Think Millions of dollars in income taxes Clark County residents employed in Portland must pay each year while not being given any degree of voice in Oregon’s political scene or think of the failed Columbia River Crossing and the Millions wasted as they worked diligently to force Clark County to accept and fund their light rail a short distance into the community with the promise of a new bridge to replace the aging Interstate 5 Bridges. Remember “No light rail, no bridge, no kidding” from then Governor Kitzhaber?

Son of CRC

I have stated all along that the failed CRC (Columbia River Crossing light rail project) wasn’t “dead,” but in a politically induced coma. And while the latest effort to “begin a discussion or process” is claimed to not be about resurrecting the failed CRC, the following short clip of Rep. Sharon Wylie (D. 49) speaking in support of HB 2095 indicates to me that the end goal is a resurrection, either in whole or part.

Due to several circumstances, Clark County Conservative will maintain a neutral stance on this as it moves forward. I am told by many self professed better than me’s that they have it handled, so I defer it to them.

Light Rail HellThe words above spoken by former Port of Vancouver Director Larry Paulson is indicative of the uphill battle we waged for nearly 20 years against forcing us to accept Portland, Oregon’s financially ailing light rail system a few blocks into our community, across state lines.

“It’s a done deal,” “Nothing you can do will stop it,” “Hounds of Whinerville,” and of course, “like it or not” were repeatedly heard as we plowed ahead, elected representatives that supported us over Portland and eventually, saw the ill-fated Columbia River Crossing project die painful death.

Or so we thought.

Are We Past The Point of No Return?

Wile E. Coyote Hate GOPIt seems to be a saying widely disseminated today, being past the point of no return. We hear it in relation to climate change, economical woe and much more.

But where it may be more truthful than anywhere else is in our political discourse, both nationally and locally.

It seems that although our political discourse has been brutal at times since our country was founded, it took on a new level of vitriol beginning with the announcement of George W. Bush winning the 2000 presidential election, with the false cries of “he stole the election” heard ever since.

Of note is how both craftily avoided using the words “light rail” since the effort to force light rail on the community against our wishes is what forced the bloated boondoggle into a comatose state.

Updated: Deny, Deny, Deny, but Stack the Deck

It seems the very instant anyone brings up mention of the comatose CRC light rail project or even light rail itself, they are quickly deluged with denials and ridicule over it with the usual call of the project is dead and buried and we will not see a new bridge over the Columbia River for at least a generation.

We see comments from C3G2 as, “THE SKY IS FALLING! AKA, THE OREGON-ONLY CRC IS BACK! (….not)” in response to observations from an Oregon resident concerning efforts south of the river.

This blog has shown the gradual efforts from our side of the river in calling for a reassessment of transportation needs similar to those seen years ago as the CRC light rail project grew into the bloated boondoggle it promised to become.

Will Light Rail Win This Time?

Light Rail HellI have said all along that the CRC did not actually die, but fell into an induced coma as both states, Oregon and Washington failed to fund their portions amidst much teeth gnashing and wailing on the part of proponents, some elected officials and business people that left the appearance of missing out on personal profits.

While there is no official announcement of a CRC light rail type of project coming back into play, there are a few indicators being heard of just that possibility coming out of light rail proponents.

The Lazy C has run numerous articles and editorials extolling once again, the need to replace the I-5 Bridges across the Columbia River between the states of Oregon and Washington. Of course, each makes sure to mention those that listened to constituents and worked to stop funding in a negative manner.

What We Really Need Is Good Paying Jobs

Tenement 3Not too surprising to see the Lazy C editorializing in the Sunday edition, “Make Housing Affordable” with, “In order to thrive, our community must accommodate young families, newcomers.”

Wasn’t it years worth of pushing for more and more “affordable housing” that led to the mortgage bubble that burst and saw our economy tank?

How about instead of pushing for more government involvement in housing, government and envirowackos get out of the way and allow some good paying, family wage middle class jobs be created instead of pushing for taxpayer subsidized playgrounds for the wealthy like the concrete jungle planned for the waterfront?

What Killed the CRC?

CRC TombstoneInteresting to see KGW 8 publishing yet another article on the comatose CRC, 8 things that wrecked the new I-5 bridge with the usual calls and blame of what they feel brought the project down.

Listed are 1. Washington Legislators; 2. Transit; 3. Extras; 4. Tolls; 5. Finances; 6. Bridge Design; 7. ODOT and 8. Oregon legislators.

I can’t argue that each played a role in seeing the project closed down.

But ultimately, one thing is primarily to blame and that is the project never had the support of citizens north of the river, in Clark County.

Even though brought to his attention long ago that incumbent council member Turlay had distanced himself from county councilor Madore and the Liz Pike write-in effort, Francisco continues to claim a false linkage of Turlay and Madore due to support from over 4 years ago.

Isn’t one proven Liar enough on Vancouver City Council?

Why can’t George Francisco stop lying about the incumbent council member and address issues of importance to the city? I ask that due to seeing just today next to a Lazy C article addressing a $4 Million projected surplus for Vancouver revenues, the following ad for Francisco, again making the false claim on Turlay

Bully’s Are Not “Willing Partners”

While many are upset over Ridgefield Mayor Ron Onslow referring to 18th Legislative District Representative Liz Pike as a “Farm Girl” during the October 6, 2015 Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council meeting, I am more concerned with the blarney uttered by Metro Councilor Shirley Craddick.

“I’ll just be snarky. You had a willing partner on the Oregon side, and it was the state legislature in Washington that didn’t support this package. So when you say you don’t have a partner, you need to take some responsibility in that.”

Ms. Craddick is dead wrong when she said, “You had a willing partner on the Oregon side…”

Did Marc Boldt Really Vote Against Light Rail?

An interesting referral was made towards me this evening under Lefty Lou’s latest Press Talk rant concerning the Christian Berrigan led Write-in effort of Liz Pike for County Council Chair, one I did not expect.

Way down in the comment, former County Commissioner Betty Sue Morris stated,

“Ed Elder Marc Boldt did not vote for light rail. In 2008, when the ‘preferred alternative’ for the CRC was in front of the RTC for approval and included light rail, both Marc Boldt and I voted no. Check with either Lew Waters [or] Robert Dean if you don’t believe me!”

Why Is Light Rail Being Discussed Again?

Clark County voters defeated a measure to extend Portland’s light rail line into Vancouver in 1995 by a 2 to 1 vote. Beginning in the early 2000’s, light rail became a growing issue and by 2008 it became the “Locally Preferred Alternative” chosen by the C-Tran Board of Directors, Vancouver City Council and the RTC.

Who Are The Real Culprits?

Earlier in the month, the Lazy C saw fit to publish a series of Letters to the Editor condemning the actions of officials in killing off the CRC light rail project.

We read,

“Rep. Liz Pike, R-Camas, has burned any and all bridges when it comes to starting a new dialogue about the construction of a new Interstate 5 Bridge.”

“There is solid evidence that Rep. Liz Pike, R-Camas, worked hard to kill the Columbia River Crossing project because she was opposed to light rail coming into Vancouver.”

“The most important reason to build a new Columbia River bridge is safety. When the big earthquake strikes this area, the bridge will collapse and many people will die. An eastern bridge won’t help.”

Need for Third Bridge Remains Ignored

In light of the October 13, 2019 Lazy C (the Columbian) article New I-5 Bridge project: Here we go, again … again, I decided to unmask an older post on the real needs of the community on river crossings.

Only time will tell if we go backwards to being strong armed by our neighbor to the South, of if both states will actually address and do what is needed to resolve the pressing issue.

Miami Traffic bAs everybody in Clark and Multnomah Counties saw, the Wednesday, June 17, 2015 commute was a mess, a real nightmare as once again, a Semi Truck accident closed the bridge in the early hours of the morning.

As has happened before, traffic had to be diverted several miles east to the Glenn Jackson Bridge to cross the Columbia River, causing a massive traffic back-up for several miles for commuters.

Almost immediately we heard the cries of supporters of the now comatose CRC light rail project of how certain people were to blame not approving that light rail project, as if somehow magically, forcing light rail a few blocks into our community would have prevented a driver from drifting too far to the right, striking the bridge and rolling over.

Cleveland 3Annette Cleveland, Democrat 49th Legislative District State Senator once again fires and misses the target! In an op-ed published by the Lazy C, pertaining to renewed efforts to engage Oregon in discussions on alleviating traffic congestion on the overcrowded I-5 corridor, she once again spews her misguided view.

“As we consider any renewed effort to come up with a plan to replace the dangerous Interstate 5 Bridge, it is imperative that we apply the lessons of the more than 10-year effort to build the Columbia River Crossing,” Cleveland writes.

She continues, “First, we learned that a decade-long process of designs, plans and public meetings can be derailed at the 11th hour, wasting millions of dollars already spent and leaving hundreds of millions of federal dollars on the table. We can’t afford to squander taxpayer dollars like that.”

Inslee Tipped His Hand

Inslee 002Once again, the Governor snuck into town with little or no fanfare, not even much prior notice, to “hear the need for the $83 Million Mill Plain I-5 exchange that nobody seems to know too much about.

Somebody knows, of course, but aren’t speaking very loudly.

Some speculate if the plan isn’t to piecemeal the failed CRC light rail project into place before the voters that have rejected every single funding mechanism are wise to it.

Is There An Echo Around Here?

Simply amazing to read in the Lazy C from one of America’s wealthiest individuals, Ken Fisher of Fisher Investments;

He advocated for embracing the non-urban nature of Southwest Washington, and urged local leaders not to tie themselves to Portland as they develop the community.

Portland may be trendy, but Southwest Washington is less concerned with taste and style, and more concerned with the “real” world, he said.

“I’ve got a lot of class and all of it’s low. I got a lot of taste and all of it’s bad. I see all these people who suffer from inferiority complexes who want to go and be a foodie in Portland. I will do that when I’m dragged across the river,” Fisher said, in a characteristically dry dig at urban America.

Let Portland be Portland, you guys be you,” he continued, winning applause from the crowd.

Under the leadership of Lefty Lou, they never fail to show complete and utter hypocrisy as they work towards implementing a one-party rule under the leftists.

The Monday, Dec 15, 2014 “In Our View” editorial gives us an excellent example of just that.

I’m not going to delve too much on the actual subject, County Commissioner Tom Mielke’s proposal to “prevent County Administrator Mark McCauley from consolidating or eliminating any of the departments as he assumes new power as county manager when the charter goes into effect Jan. 1” as that issue will be settled soon after a public hearing and open discussion between the County Commissioners.
