CRC Proponents Ignoring The Will Of The Voters

Once again, voters in Clark County have spoken on dragging Portland, Oregon’s financially failing light rail into our community by defeating the latest C-Tran Proposition 1 for raising the sales tax to cover the cost of operations & maintenance of the light rail line. Just as before, voters resoundingly rejected it by nearly 20,000 votes.

In spite of claims otherwise by proponents, the vote was well known among voters to be a proxy vote on light rail itself since all promises previously made of letting voters vote on whether or not we even want Portland’s folly have been denied by elected rulers.

One of the first was Vancouver’s Mayor, ‘Teflon’ Tim Leavitt, known for lying through his teeth to win office as upon seeing the results of the election indicated the “result only confirms that voters do not support raising sales tax to pay for light rail.”

City of Vancouver Rejects Most Signatures On Anti-Light Rail Petition

It comes as no surprise, in the ongoing melodrama from the city of Vancouver, Washington, that we now read Anti-light rail petitioners fall short of signatures, to include “Review costs city $31,000,” all in the effort to further denigrate citizens opposed to dragging Portland’s financially troubled light rail across the Columbia River into our community.

That a petition had to even be circulated in an effort to let taxpayers who will see generations into the future stuck paying for the bloated Columbia River Crossing Project is sad in itself. But, as we have seen explained on this blog and others like Clark County Politics, the powers that be, mostly under the direction of Vancouver’s Mayor Tim Leavitt, voters true input is not wanted, just our paychecks.

We read that some two-thirds of signatures on the petition were “invalid.” Further down in the article, we see that what makes them “invalid” is duplication or that some lived just outside the actual city limits.

Missed in this latest effort to deny taxpayers a voice in this boondoggle, is the taxpayer opposition to light rail, shown in how many people who felt they were within the city limits signed the petition.

Much is made of the claimed “$31,000 cost” to verify signatures, but I have to question the veracity of that being an actual cost. Since there were just over 9,000 signatures turned in, how does it cost nearly $3.50 per signature to verify? And, since it is City/County employees doing the verification, aren’t they on the clock doing what we already pay them for?

Columbia River Crossing, The Bridge To Bankruptcy

Bridges almost always end up with nick names as taxpayers cast aside the official designated name and express their views of them through locally attached names. We saw that with the Tacoma Narrows Bridge nicknamed “Galloping Gertie” due to peculiar gyrations and pitching those crossing experienced before it collapsed in a wind storm just 4 months after it opened in November 1940.

Sometimes the name is complimentary, such as “The Bridge of the Gods” up by Cascade Locks and sometimes the name expresses disgust at a high cost that isn’t justifiable, such as Alaska’s Gravina Island Bridge nicknamed “A Bridge To Nowhere” since it was projected to cost $398 million to connect Ketchikan with Gravina Island, a small community of about 50 people and a small single runway airport, accessed by ferry in about 7 minutes.

Locally, we have the Columbia River Crossing seeking to replace the aging but serviceable spans of the I-5 Bridge across the Columbia River connecting Washington and Oregon that with the forced inclusion of extending Portland’s financially troubled Max Line light rail a short distance into Vancouver is projected to cost about $4 Billion, before figuring in interest on bonds and the to be expected cost overruns. Once those are added, it is estimated to cost upwards of $10 Billion or more.

Saying the project is contentious is an understatement as it has been brought up in every political campaign for a number of years now. Current Vancouver mayor, Tim Leavitt campaigned heavily on not tolling residents for the bridge project, only to totally reverse his stand almost as soon as he was announced the winner. Our nickname for him now is “Tim ‘the liar’ Leave-it,” indicating how Vancouver citizens are disgusted with him and want him to leave office.

4 Arrested in Connection to Day After Christmas Max Light Rail Attack

From the Portland Police Bureau:

This evening, Thursday January 12, 2012, police officers from the Transit Police Division made four arrests in connection with the December 26, 2011 assault and riot on a MAX train in Southeast Portland.

18-year-old Rakeshia Shamone Burns, her 16-year-old half-sister, and the 13-year-old half-sister of the 16-year-old were all arrested and charged with Assault in the Third Degree, Riot, Disorderly Conduct in the Second Degree, Harassment, and Interfering with Public Transportation.

38-year-old Selena Estelle Harris, the mother of Burns and her 16-year-old half-sister, was also arrested for two counts of Hindering Prosecution. Harris is accused of lying to police officers about her daughters. whereabouts and of hiding them from police.

Good work, Portland Police

Selena Harris has been an outspoken critic of the Police after her son was murdered in Old Town in 2010 and his murderer was not found and arrested after a year.

Have the Light Rail Votes Already Been Counted? Before A Vote?

As we all know, citizens of Clark County have voted against 3 measures to approve extending Portland’s financially plagued Max Light Rail into our community. In 1995, a vote was held for a direct approval and was defeated by a 2 to 1 margin.

In 2002, state-wide Resolution Bill 51 for transportation improvements was seen largely as a back door approval for funding light rail and was rejected state wide in the 2002 general election.

In 2004 we defeated a sales tax increase in Proposition 1 in the general election in large part due to the written statement against that said, “C-Tran contributed $3,000,000 out of the $65,000,000 cost for I-5 HOV lanes. Now Clark County Commissioners can ask taxpayers to raise car license fees for additional tax dollars; possibly paving the way for light rail.”
“C-Tran paid over $3,000,000 for light rail studies. Portland owns the MAX gravy train. Washington taxpayers will pay a percentage of Tri-Met’s total transit costs even if only one inch of light rail crosses the river; more Clark County taxation without representation!”

In 2005, it was brought back and passed, but with a gerrymandered sub-district, much like is being planned for the promised vote on Light Rail Maintenance and Operation sales tax increase we were originally promised for this year, but may not see until 2012, 2013 if at all.

Clackamas Sheriff Blames New MAX Line For Crime Increase

“The Clackamas County sheriff said Tuesday he’s concerned the new MAX line is dropping off more than passengers at Clackamas Town Center; it’s dropping off crime too.”

“In the five months since the MAX Green line first arrived at the Clackamas Town Center, Sheriff Craig Roberts says crime in the surrounding area is up 32 percent this year and calls for service are up 56 percent compared to 2009.”

This is the same Light Rail our elected officials have decided we in Vancouver MUST have with any new bridge over I-5. That I recall, we have been poo pooed every time we express concern over increased crime.

TriMet, naturally, isn’t too sure about the obvious link in the increase in crime.

Crime is bad enough already, we don’t need more

We need to stand together and let those on the Columbia River Crossing Commission and all of our elected officials in Clark County that we cannot afford Light Rail, we don’t want all of the expense and we sure don’t need any more crime.
