I-1639 Must Be Defeated!

by lewwaters

I-1639, the most egregious and intrusive anti-gun effort we have seen to date has been approved for the ballot this election. It goes without saying that those of us who appreciate our constitutional right to defend our homes from bad guys must band together to ensure it is defeated.

To that end, the National Rifle Association has joined the effort to see it go down in flame with their website, Initiative1639.org

In announcing the website the NRA said,

“ ‘Law -abiding gun owners in Washington State need to understand the impact I-1639 will have on their Second Amendment right to self-defense,’ said Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. “The NRA’s new website, Initiative1639.org provides the facts on how this gun-control initiative will infringe on law-abiding citizens’ constitutional rights and make it more difficult to protect themselves and their families’.”

What is this “Gun Lobby” We Hear About?

by lewwaters

Ruger 2Proclaiming an intent to “end gun violence,” media and anti-gun special interest groups like the Washington Alliance For Gun Responsibility, Moveon.org, the Brady Campaign and others constantly bombard us with their claims of the gun lobby this and the gun lobby that as this elusive gun lobby was pure evil incarnate with no soul and cares less about people and children.

If you recall, the Washington Alliance For Gun Responsibility was responsible for bringing us I-594 in our state, requiring universal background checks on the basis of it was going to “make us safer.”

That no sooner went into law than they announced in a July 2, 2015 email, “When we set out to pass universal background checks in Washington the pundits said it couldn’t be done. The gun lobby was too strong. Yet, last year, we proved them wrong — and Washington is safer as a result. But that isn’t the end of the story. The fight to save lives from gun violence is just beginning.”

Why Vote No on I-594?

by lewwaters

It is your rights at stake. I-594 will not do anything to decrease crime or keep illegal guns out of the hands of criminals. Criminals do not follow the law, what makes anybody believe they will follow this law?

Clark GOP Puts Elected Officials on Notice – Our Rights Are Not Negotiable

by lewwaters

The Constitution of the United States of America is one of the most remarkable documents ever written. It clearly and in plain language lays out the foundation of our nation, the makeup of our government and establishes the rights of our citizens along with the limitations of government.

It has served our nation well in our short history and guided us into becoming the super power we have been known as, along with being the freest nation on the planet a long as we have abided by it and followed the basic tenets of it.

But government wishes to grow and assume powers our country was founded to get away from, putting the limits on citizens and granting more powers to government denied it when we adhere to our Constitution.

Get Illegal Guns Off Of The Streets

by lewwaters

Gun 2Once again we see people deeply divided over the issue of gun control and our second amendment rights following a maniac committing mass murder in a school of young children. Some blame the gun while others blame the shooter and our mental health care system as both sides dig their feet in to promote their perceived solution.

As the rancor increases, bills are introduced by the droves in state legislatures and at the federal level, letters are written to newspapers, online forums light up with varying views and even face to face discussions occur, many heated and all too often, misrepresenting, misinterpreting or misunderstanding the opposing view.

Case in point, a video put out by the City of Newark, New Jersey featuring their Mayor, Cory Booker offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of someone carrying a gun within the city.

Emergency Ordinance Backfires on Gun Rights!

by lewwaters

Written by Lynda Wilson and Licentia Diligo, reposted by request of Reality Clark County

The Second Amendment says “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”.   The Washington State Constitution says it even stronger, “The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself, or the state, shall not be impaired.” However, two of our current County Commissioners think otherwise (Stuart and Boldt).  An Ordinance that was unanimously passed in October 2005 by the three Commissioners at the time, Marc Boldt, Steve Stuart and Betty Sue Morris, determined that during a declared emergency, if they thought you “intend” to cause bodily harm you can’t even possess, let alone carry a gun (or anything else that could be construed as a weapon).   Mind you, possess means ‘own’ therefore not even able to keep in your own home or anywhere else.  This  Ordinance 2005-10-03, Section 2.48A.090 (i) references this.

“An order prohibiting the carrying or possession of firearms or any instrument which is capable of producing bodily harm and which is carried or possessed with intent to use the same to cause such harm; provided that any such order shall not apply to peace officers or military personnel engaged in the performance of their official duties”.

Ann Rivers Receives NRA Award, Along With Don Benton and Tom Mielke

by lewwaters

Ann Rivers, candidate for the 18th Legislative District seat being vacated by Jaime Herrera, was surprised Saturday evening, March 13, 2010, to receive an NRA Award while attending the annual Friends of the NRA Banquet held at the Clark County Event Center.

Also receiving an NRA Award were State Senator Don Benton and Clark County Commissioner Tom Mielke.

In a Press Release issued today, Ann said,

“I was taken totally by surprise. And I was thrilled and honored to be in such great company. I come from a family of hunters, and as a result I was very pleased to be included with such luminaries as Senator Benton and Commissioner Mielke. We all know the importance of both gun rights and gun safety, and I was happy to acknowledge this memento for my support of the goals of the NRA.”

Ann acknowledged to me that she has been working to raise money to send 4 young marksmen, Olympic hopefuls, to the national competition.

Ann is a long time supporter of gun rights and the 2nd Amendment saying, “Once the 2nd Amendment is dismantled, the remaining amendments aren’t far behind.”

How true.

Ann, along with her husband Fred and sons Rex and Derrick have hunted many times together. “One of the many legacies I want to leave behind is the right to hunt and to insure that families coming on after mine will continue to enjoy this fantastic hobby and adventure,” Ann says.

I join many others in congratulating Ann on receiving this well deserved recognition and for standing up for one of our most basic rights as American citizens.

Congratulations to Don Benton and Tom Mielke for supporting those essential rights as well.

UPDATE: Jon Rusell claims receipt of NRA recognition as well. Jon Russell: Select few awarded at Clark County Annual NRA Banquet

Mayor Pollard Resigns From Mayors Against Illegal Guns

by lewwaters

Across the blogosphere word has been coming out of Vancouvers Mayor Royce Pollard joining the ant-gun group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

Some have insinuated that he recently joined in an effort to gain valuable votes from anti-gun voters in Vancouver. Others labeled him as anti-gun.

I emailed the Mayor last evening questioning him on his membership in this group,

Hello Mayor Pollard,

As a fellow US Army Viet Nam Veteran (C Troop 7/17th Air Cav, 69 -71), I am interested in your position on gun control and second amendment considering your membership in Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

Some are saying you only recently joined the group, to draw votes from the left, but I found your name listed on a May 2008 letter to Congress telling me that is not the case.

Since there are only a few Mayors in Washington that belong to this group, may I ask what interested you in it?

I looked over your campaign site and see no mention of gun control or the second amendment.

While we are all interested in gun safety and lowering crime, I’d appreciate knowing your position on gun control and the second amendment.

Thank you,

Lew Waters
Vancouver , Wa .

Today I received in reply a copy of his letter of resignation from the group.

Message:

I became a member of Mayor’s Against Illegal Guns based on my belief that this group would help in the fight against criminal gun use. After all, who isn’t for making our communities safer by getting illegal guns off the streets and out of the hands of the wrong people? After careful consideration and after listening to the concerns of many of my constituents I have come to the conclusion that some of your organization’s statements and actions can be construed as infringing on the rights of legitimate gun owners. Because of this, I request that you remove my name from your web site and from your membership lists.

As a lifetime gun owner and user and as a 27-year veteran of the U.S. Army, I strongly value our constitutional right to bear arms and would never support anything that restricts that right. Please know that while I am withdrawing my membership from your organization, I will continue to work with our local law enforcement officials on the problem of criminals illegally obtaining and using guns to commit crimes.

Sincerely,
ROYCE E. POLLARD
Mayor
America’s Vancouver

I congratulate Mayor Pollard for resigning from such an association that masks their true intent and thank him for standing up for our second amendment rights.
