Random Act of Journalism by the Lazy C

by lewwaters

hell-freezes-overHard to believe that the Lazy C, staunch supporter of the CRC light rail scheme, is admitting to what we have been saying all along, the C-Tran Gang of Five, Steve Stuart, Ron Onslow, Tim ‘the Liar’ Leavitt, Bart Hansen and Larry Smith, did indeed sell out to TriMet by approving the signing of a contract there is no possible way they could have read.

Records detail controversial C-Tran-TriMet deal

Admitted in the article, “A controversial light-rail contract inked in September was still being changed hours before the C-Tran Board of Directors approved it, and board members never saw the actual agreement before the vote was taken, according to records released by the agency this month.”

Benton Pushes Back on “Oregon Only” CRC/Light Rail (UPDATED)

by lewwaters
Senator Don Benton

Senator Don Benton

Once more we see a prime example of why Senator Don Benton (R. 17th) is maybe the single most hated person in office by the Lazy C, he continues to stand up for the struggling middle class taxpayer over special interests like Identity Clark County and the rest of those hoping to straddle that same struggling middle class family with higher taxes, fees and tolls to pay for an extension of Portland’s financially troubled light rail into Vancouver.

As we know, the CRC was declared dead, but like a monster rising from the ashes, powers that be are trying to breathe new life into it, calling for wasting more tax dollars and forcing the community to accept a bloated transportation project that they refuse to let the community vote on, knowing that it will likely fail, as it did before.

Oregon Governor Kitzhaber is behind pushing what he refers to as an “Oregon Only” approach with Clark County commuters being straddled with the expense through tolls and fares for those forced to ride light rail into jobs in Portland, once C-Tran reduces bus service to meet the requirements of light rail.

Who Mitigates on Behalf of Taxpayers?

by lewwaters

Light Rail HellEven though once declared dead by both Governors of Washington and Oregon, the zombie-like specter of the Columbia River Crossing light rail project continues to have new life pumped into it by those very Governors along with deep pocketed special interests hoping to reap millions on the backs of a struggling middle class taxpayer.

And one of those special interests is our own local newspaper of record, the Lazy C who has blindly supported the project since its inception and helped cover up many of the shortcomings as well as ignored concerns expressed by citizens.

We saw this as it became known the proposed replacement bridge to cross the Columbia River was to create a choke point for river commerce by an insufficient height, providing only 98 feet initially, upped to 116 feet later, still far lower than the current 178 feet when the lift spans are raised.

Instead of seeing the folly, considering how much commerce travels under the bridge, officials merely decide to ‘mitigate’ with the three manufacturers likely to be affected the most, Oregon Iron Works, Greenberry and Thompson Metal Fab.

Jim Moeller: Follow the Yellow Brick Road

by lewwaters

College 4Submitted by Professor Robert Dean

MoellerJim Moeller Oh Robert! Will you please quit trying to scare me with your “legal mumbo jumbo”? I don’t take you seriously I certainly hope you don’t. Clark County going bankrupt??!! Really?? How is that going to happen when there is NO county money in it? WOW! Are you that desperate to kill this Project?

Jim Moeller No need to answer that question, Robert. Of course you are.

Competing CRC Ads – Who Really Has the Majority?

by lewwaters

CRC proponents recently released an ad and Jim Moeller made sure to circulate it throughout the legislature in an effort to convince elected officials in Olympia they were in the majority.

Couv.com has released a more truthful ad featuring numerous citizens expressing why the CRC is a bad deal for Clark County.

Proponents ad may be seen at the Couv.com link above. Take note, those speaking in the pro-ad are all speaking from the exact same script with the editing cut to switch back and forth to say their pre-written message.

Couv.com did not have a written script, we each spoke freely of our views.

Lazy C Gets it Wrong, Yet Again

by lewwaters

Light Rail HellRegular readers know that the so called newspaper of record, heavily biased towards strapping the struggling middle class with more expenses in order to pay for forcing the financially failing light rail into Clark County from Portland, is probably one of the least reliable sources of news in the Pacific Northwest.

Hence, they are labeled the Lazy C for not properly vetting or researching many subjects, primarily anything political in nature or critical of the Columbia River Crossing light rail project,

They spare no ink when it comes to maligning critics and in large part, is behind the current brouhaha over County Commissioners Mielke & Madore being blasted daily for over a week now for legally hiring much hated State Sen. Don Benton to head the County Dept of Environmental Services.

But they out do themselves in getting wrong in what seems like an attempt to smear a group critical of the current CRC design and calling themselves the I-5 Project Inc. as they run an article on lobbying efforts on behalf of both sides of the issue, CRC foes, supporters step up lobbying efforts

Sen. Benton Rebuttal of Gov. Inslee On CRC

by lewwaters

As was acknowledged by the Columbian, concerning Washington State Governor Jay Inslee’s sneaking into town to hold what can only be described as a Cheerleading Session promoting the CRC, encouraging the hand-picked supporters to “raise the decibels,” meaning to squash struggling middle class taxpayers unwilling to send even more of their dwindling tax dollars to Olympia, Senator Don Benton, (R. 17th) held his own impromptu presser right after Inslee’s.

Wishful Thinking and High Hopes Fuel CRC, Not Concern for the People

by lewwaters

CRC CorruptionFor some years now, the Columbia River Crossing Project, an overly ambitious desire to replace the aging Interstate 5 bridges between Clark County Washington and Portland Oregon and force Clark County citizens to accept Portland’s financially embattled light rail against our will, has elected to ignore the voters and taxpayers on both sides of the river. Common sense was thrown out the window from the beginning as schemes, plots and at times, outright lies have been used in an effort to portray the project as being favorable to citizens.

On the contrary, more people are expressing opposition after each effort.

But when it comes to the empire building effort of those involved with the CRC, taxpayers mean little even though we will be forced to foot the bill for this boondoggle for many generations and jobs will be destroyed upriver and in downtown Vancouver, Washington. Jobs that the very people they expect to foot the bill for this nightmare rely on to survive and pay the tolls, fees and taxes that will be needed to pay the monstrosity off.

Changing Minds on the CRC

by lewwaters

CRCThe Columbia River Crossing Project, a bloated effort to replace the aging spans of the Interstate Bridge connecting Southwest Washington and Portland, Oregon and force Clark County Washington to accept extending Portland financially ailing light rail was considered a “done deal,” just accept it, it’s happening, regardless of how the taxpayers that will be forced to foot the bill for decades thinks of it.

For a long time we have heard from the likes of Mayor Tim Leavitt, former Mayor Royce Pollard, Representative Jim Moeller, County Commissioner Steve Stuart, Portland’s former Mayor Sam Adams, current Portland Mayor Charlie Hale end many more ego-inflated elected officials that our resistance to “modernization” was futile, “it’s coming, deal with it.”

While most of us agree replacing the bridges is a good idea, we in Clark County have long resisted the notion of we must accept Portland’s deep in debt light rail. And the tide just may be turning as more and more, we see former supporters switching to opponents as efforts to peel back the shroud of secrecy that has long enveloped the CRC is back and light is shined on some very questionable procedures.

Elected Officials Raise More Questions On CRC

by lewwaters

CRCFrom 3rd Congressional District Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler, to 17th Legislative District Senator Don Benton and to 14th Legislative District Senator Curtis King, chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, critical questions are beginning to be asked and recommendations made to clear up the many discrepancies surrounding the Columbia River Crossing project.

Senator Benton has long been a critic, having seen early on in the project that it could not live up to promises or expectations and would be a massive waste of tax dollars as planned. His calls and cries for reining the project and the steady flow of tax dollars in, over $160 Million to date, have been largely ignored and cast aside as what now appears to be the biggest swindle ever to hit Southwest Washington forged ahead amidst growing public opposition.

Oregonian, You Keep Your Light Rail and We’ll Keep Commissioner Madore

by lewwaters

This blog no longer supports David Madore and calls upon him to resign immediately!

Train 1Not even a month into his term as our newest County Commissioner and already David Madore is acting on his campaign promises, standing up for Clark County citizens and bucking the light rail swindle from Portland into our community, just as we asked him to do when we elected him.

As can be expected, that is not setting well with the ruling class elites pushing light rail in order to gain access to our revenues to bail out their deeply indebted transit folly, now sitting at about $1.6 Billion and growing every day.

We elected David Madore over keeping Marc Boldt and together with fellow conservative Tom Mielke, have a fighting chance to see some accountability where the CRC swindle is concerned.

Knowing now that our County Commissioners will stand on the side of citizens over the special interests of the CRC swindle, we can expect volleys of attacks aimed at the County Commission and they have already started.

CRC – The Biggest Swindle Ever For Clark County?

by lewwaters

PickpocketIt is no secret that much of Clark County, Washington holds a very negative view of the Columbia River Crossing project (CRC). The more the layers of this scam are pulled back, the more we appear justified in our disdain for what more and more comes across as a massive swindle to suck revenue out of our own cash-strapped community and give it to Portland, Oregon to help with the massive debt, some $1.6 Billion and growing daily, associated with their bloated light rail line.

Even though Clark County citizens rejected extending their folly into our community in 1995, the push has continued to force Clark County to accept it, even to the point of gerrymandering a sub-district in 2005 in an effort to ‘fix’ the vote to approve a C-TRAN sales tax increase perceived to be a back door funding of light rail that was rejected county-wide in the November 2004 election.

No Funding For CRC

by lewwaters

In the ongoing bi-state opposition to the CRC/light rail extension from Portland, Oregon into Washington, voices are being raised to counter efforts by advocates to appropriate funding for the project that voters have not yet been allowed to vote on, potentially violating Washington State’s High Capacity Transportation Act. While advocates continue to demand the project receive funding, neither state has yet shown the ability to budget the needed funds and both currently run deep budget deficits.

We have more pressing issues that need our dwindling tax dollars and this project needs stopped. At least until our economy improves, a workable design can be drawn that does not hamper river traffic and threaten hundreds of good paying jobs upriver from the I-5 bridge and most importantly, voters and taxpayers voices listened to since we are going to have to pay for it.

This is not a one state project and reaches across the state line of both of our states. Several times now opponents from Oregon have joined forces with Washington State taxpayers speaking out, attending rallies and holding press conferences. They come to our City Council Meeting and County Commissioner Meetings to lend their voices to ours.

They now ask for our help to speak out to Oregon Legislators.

Columbian Caught Sandbagging CRC Reports, Says Red Flags “Not Newsworthy”

by lewwaters

It is well known in our community that the newspaper of record, the Columbian is wholly in the tank for the Columbia River Crossing Project and forcing Portland, Oregon’s financially ailing light rail into our community. We have all seen how they minimize red flags raised, such as the Coast Guard’s refusing to sign off on the design due to insufficient river traffic clearance and even comments left by supporters that barges and ships that may require more than 95 foot clearance, such as the Columbia River Dredge, should cut down their masts or whatever extends higher to clear the light rail planned to be hung underneath the new bridge on a lower level.

Recent revelations by forensic accountant Tiffany Couch of Acuity Group LLC has indicated, through her independent audit of hundreds of documents several red flags, including a potential violation of state law, huge cost overruns potentially not be handled properly and even Millions on cost appearing in CRC documents that appear to be marked to fund expansion and improvement projects inside Oregon, several miles outside of the CRC Transportation area.

This blog covered the first of the three reports released so far here and here. Additional coverage can be found at Couv.com as well as looking through Clark County Politics, both of whom have given the CRC as much critical coverage as I have, if not more.

How Many Ways Can the Leavitt Cabal Squeeze Taxpayers?

by lewwaters

It seems there is hardly ever a city council meeting in Vancouver that we don’t hear of BRT, LPA, CRC, LRT, C-Tran or any other maze of abbreviated acronym for any number of projects favored by Vancouver Mayor, Tim Leavitt and 4 other members of the city council, Jack Burkman, Jeanne Harris, Bart Hansen and Larry Smith.

Rarely do we hear relevant questions coming from any of them as to just how they expect citizens to pay for all of these “pie in the sky” projects apparently believing each is the only thing citizens will be paying for.

Public hearings have all of the appearance to be shams, held only to satisfy a legal requirement to allow citizens to speak while those same citizen concerns remain ignored by the cabal as they ram full speed ahead with little or no clue on just how these many projects favored by the council majority will be paid for.

Only two council members seem willing to get down to the nitty gritty of asking how such projects will be paid for with both, Jeanne Stewart and Bill Turlay being kept in a minority as the rest come across as their minds being firmly made up to forge ahead long before any public hearings are held.

Forensic Auditor Responds to Columbian Hit Piece on Analysis of C-Tran Finances

by lewwaters

As we know, Forensic Auditor Tiffany Couch issued an analysis recently critical of C-Tran finances and their claims of needing more revenue they seek in Proposition 1. It goes without saying that the Columbian, our local mouthpiece for any pro-Democrat, pro-CRC, pro-Light Rail or pro-C-Tran measure would do what they could to discredit it, which they did in their hit piece, Analysis questions C-Tran’s financial claims; agency fires back

Included in the article is C-Tran’s critical response here, in essence labeling her a liar while the article itself seeks to taint her work due to her being separately hired by local businessman and the Columbian’s ‘boogieman’ David Madore to perform a Forensic Analysis of the Columbia River Crossing, a completely separate agency.

Ms Couch’s report is here

Tiffany Couch has now issued a rebuttal to the C-Tran claims of her not using complete numbers, numbers they provided to her and their effort to label her work incomplete that you can read here

Rebuttal of C-Tran claims:

Largest Recipient of CRC Funds Sues to Keep Financial Records Secret

by lewwaters

An interesting development in the ongoing “transparent and open” process of the Columbia River Crossing Project, responsible for so far swallowing up some $140 Million in “studies” for a new I-5 Bridge to run Portland’s Light Rail into Vancouver, wanted by taxpayers or not.

David Evans and Associates, so far the single largest recipient of funds from the CRC, accepting more than $30 Million so far, answered a notice from WashDOT over their intent to comply with a FOIA request for financial records with a lawsuit quietly filed in Thurston County to block release of their records on file with WashDOT here.

The records request was part of an ongoing private audit of the CRC finances funded by successful Vancouver businessman David Madore. Tiffany Couch, the forensic auditor hired by Mr. Madore says, “the request for the Evans financials was one of series of records requests she’s filed.”
