Now that Steve Stuart is Bailing

by lewwaters

Clark County CommissionersAs announced, Clark County Commissioner Steve Stuart has been named as the next City manager for the city of Ridgefield, Washington. Stuart previously announced he would not run for reelection this year, very likely having read the tea leaves that his chances for reelection were somewhat remote, at best.

With his leaving office early, if he actually does, the seat becomes vacant and the political party he ran under, Democrats have to present three names to the remaining County Commissioners to select his replacement.

Whoever is selected will finish out Stuarts term in office and likely will run for reelection in this November’s election.

Either Brancaccio Never Served in the Military or It’s Been a Slow News Week

by lewwaters

I often look forward to reading Columbian editor Lou Brancaccio’s Saturday column, Press Talk. It gives me a chance to see how he thinks on pertinent issues that have impact on our community and occasionally the country.

We have a proposed tax increase being discussed to bring a Class A ball team to town, still fighting over the Columbia River Crossing, Loot Rail, another tax increase for C-Tran, a lawsuit filed to overturn an initiative passed by a wide margin of voters, 3 city council seats up for grabs and of course, the ongoing brouhaha back in Washington D.C. over how fast each political party wishes to increase our national debt to bring the country to collapse.

I eagerly looked forward to getting Lou’s take on what he felt was the burning issue of the week as although I often disagree with Lou and have never actually met him face to face, have shared cordial and friendly email exchanges. I respect Lou.

I was disappointed to turn on my computer this morning and signing into the Columbian webpage, did not see Lou’s new column.

John Laird: Befitting of the ‘Gargamel’ Comparison

by lewwaters

In keeping with the Columbian’s light hearted poke at elected officials recently, comparing them to Muppet characters, I made a little comparison of my own in regards to the editors of the paper. Lou Brancaccio was compared to Count von Count and he got a kick out of it. I was unable to find a Muppet character that adequately depicts acerbic editorial page editor John Laird, though, and ended up seeing he was very much like the cartoon character Gargamel from the Smurf’s.

Beyond some physical resemblance, He displays the same attributes of being “the sworn enemy of the Smurfs and the principal antagonist,” except in our community, he is the sworn enemy and main antagonist of conservatives.

In fact, as far as I’m concerned, he displays everything that is wrong in our political landscape today, as can be seen in his Sunday, June 26, 2011 column, Food fights, hounds, science and more.

Also refreshing is seeing some liberals waking up to his bombastic blasting of conservatives, as did local Democratic Party activist Temple Lentz.

Temple rightfully points out that Laird is “personally insulting and debasing people who disagree with him.” He has a history of doing this, labeling those who disagree with him on bringing light rail from Portland to Vancouver as “ankle biting hounds from Whinerville” and such.
