Local Newspapers Don’t Matter to me

by lewwaters

For many months now, the editor of our local newspaper, the Columbian, aka the Lazy C has treated us nearly every Saturday to some editorial on how the paper is structured, assembled, operates and generally how much we need and depend on them.

To this blogger it has been an oversell and reinforced today in Lazy C opinion page editor’s latest screed Local newspaper matters to you

Jayne struggles his best to impress on the reader as to just why the local paper matters, which got me thinking. I no longer fish, so I don’t need it to wrap up my fish caught. I don’t have a bird in a cage, so no need to buy and have paper on hand to line the bottom of the cage.

Okay, that’s a bit snarky, but seriously, does the local newspaper matter to any of us? More than anything I’d love to answer ‘yes,’ but looking back over the years I was politically active, I can only answer a resounding ‘NO!’

Where is a Counter to the Lazy C?

by lewwaters

It is no secret that the overall majority of today’s media is solidly controlled and supportive of the left side of the political spectrum. Some, like our own daily “newspaper of record,” the Columbian make no effort to even hide it.

Tagged by this blog long ago as the “Lazy C” for their lack of objectivity and no interest in seeking out scandalous information on Democrat officials, they have long amounted to little more than a daily mouthpiece for the Democrat party, only promoting the positions of the Democrats daily in editorials, articles and syndicated columns, with rare lone exceptions.

John Laird, Lou Brancaccio, Greg Jayne, Stephanie Rice and so many others over the years blatantly put forth politically biased accounts lacking any objective intent and knowing they were essentially “the only game in town,” the much smaller Reflector primarily focusing on North County news and the larger Oregonian to the South also biased to the left.

Oregon Shouldn’t be Given Washington’s 3rd Congressional Seat

by lewwaters

Carolyn Long

It’s no secret that Oregon, Portland primarily has for many years tried to control Clark County Washington while looking down upon us as “Vantucky” and essentially backwater, inbred interlopers muddying their version of Nirvana with our gasoline powered monster cars.

Okay, maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but yes, we all know Portland looks down on Clark County, never hiding their disdain for us, but has shown in the past how much they would love to tap into our revenues on this side of the Columbia River to fund projects and policies they have overextended themselves on.

Think Millions of dollars in income taxes Clark County residents employed in Portland must pay each year while not being given any degree of voice in Oregon’s political scene or think of the failed Columbia River Crossing and the Millions wasted as they worked diligently to force Clark County to accept and fund their light rail a short distance into the community with the promise of a new bridge to replace the aging Interstate 5 Bridges. Remember “No light rail, no bridge, no kidding” from then Governor Kitzhaber?

Lazy C, Against Guns but for Socialism?

by lewwaters

This blog has never shied away from stating how the Lazy C, aka the Columbian newspaper, fails the very community it claims to serve with its bias and ignoring allegations of wrongdoing when it comes to Democrats.

Where they lack in deep investigative journalism locally, they make up by promoting whatever the latest agenda of the left may be.

Case in point, two editorials in the Sunday, Aug 5, 2018 edition, In Our View: Printing Guns a Dire Danger and Fear of socialism distorting nation’s political discourse.

Are We Ready to Scrap Capitalism for Socialism?

by lewwaters

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.” – Margaret Thatcher

Democratic Socialist of America

It seems many from the left have forgotten the lessons taught to us by history in regards to the old theory of a government based upon Socialism. Socialism is described by a dictionary definition as, “a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.”

The wording actually sounds fairly nice and manageable, but the reality is what has been intended since long ago by Karl Marx and the Marxist theory is, “a transitional social state between the overthrow of capitalism and the realization of communism.”

Those advocating socialism often lecture us as to how fair it is, how we are all equal and we have equality in prosperity and life, escaping the bondage of capitalism where they claim only the wealthy ever prosper from the labors of the poorer workers.

Whining and Begging, Still Failing the Community

by lewwaters

Col MonkeyColumbian editor Lou Brancaccio has never hidden his disdain for blogs and bloggers and in years past has laid a portion of blame on blogs for the Lazy C’s declining sales and subscription rate.

But the reality of it is that newspapers and media in general have no one to blame but themselves for the decline.

Long ago many told Lou that if the newspaper were more even handed and equitable in political coverage, not promoting the left more so than the right, they likely would regain many conservative readers that walked away from their product.

His response as usual, “We already endorse about as many Republicans as we do Democrats.”

How many County Councilors does it take to change a light bulb?

by lewwaters

Clark County Council

Three out of Five: But only after an extensive study by the Department of Environmental Services to determine any aspect of environmental depletion, an analysis by the County Auditor to determine whether or not the light bulb is truly in need of changing and the County Tax Assessor to determine whether or not sufficient revenues have been collected to fund the effort.

It will also require three public hearings to receive public comments on whether or not it is in the county’s best interest to change the light bulb or perhaps rewrite county ordinances on just what constitutes a “burned out light bulb”

What Drives Brancaccio?

by lewwaters

L. Brancaccio

In yet another of the endless rants against conservatives, primarily County Councilors Madore, & Mielke and Sen. Don Benton, Lazy C editor Lou Brancaccio adds to his plethora of sardonic screeds, Press Talk: What drives Madore?

As is to be expected, Brancaccio, or ol Lefty Lou as he is better known in these parts, engages in his usual self aggrandizing of just how right he always is and of course, how wrong people like Madore always are.

In fact, he pats himself on the back so much over the years I can’t fathom why his shirts aren’t threadbare on the backs.

Updated: Let’s Put This Newspaper BS to Rest

by lewwaters

The ColumbianThe ongoing saga of Madore vs the world saw an escalation not too long ago as the County Council removed the contract with the Reflector for placing legal notices and returned it to the Lazy C. Viewing the outbursts on Madore’s “newspaper” facebook page shows just how this change doesn’t set well with him.

With the support of devoted followers, allegations of “illegal favoritism,” “Collusion,” “Corruption” and just about any nefarious accusations you can think of are leveled towards the three Republicans he has labeled as “the Three Liberals,”

Back when the Reflector was selected as the county newspaper of record I fully supported the switch as it is no secret I have little regard for the Lazy C.

Lazy C Didn’t Always View Public Comment So Sacred

by lewwaters

City Council & Debbie PetersonThe local “newspaper of record,” the Columbian, or as this blog has long referred to them, the Lazy C for their lack of interest in shining light on Democrats, posted a column today, Sunday May 1, 2016 decrying efforts by Port of Vancouver Commissioner Jerry Oliver to bypass public comments recently pertaining to the proposed Oil Terminal.

Oliver gave as his reason, “They don’t come down to talk. They come down to protest.”

This seems to have raised the ire of the Lazy C editorial staff that opposes the terminal as they state in their Sunday column, “Attempting to stifle public comment no way to mitigate oil terminal concerns.”

Brancaccio’s Bocce Blunder

by lewwaters

Brancaccio FuggedaboutitLazy C editor has responded to criticism of his “Bocce Bedlam” party in a special Press Talk editorial this morning, “The ethics of getting to know you” where he essentially scoffs at the notion of anything out of the ordinary in his throwing such a party and inviting selected elected officials.

This blog covered the concerns being expressed at Editors, Politicians and Bocce Ball, Oh My! It is notable that the bulk of the concerns were not issued by the usual slate of conservative critics of Brancaccio but by liberals usually more supportive of Brancaccio and the paper.

That aspect alone should concern Brancaccio but seems to have slid right past him.

Lazy C: Eulogizing and Hypocrisy

by lewwaters

Brancaccio FoolOur community suffered a grave loss last week with the death of John McKibbin and his passenger, Irene Mustain when McKibbin’s North American AT-6 crashed into the Columbia River.

I never had much interaction with McKibbin that I can recall, although I do believe our paths likely crossed at some community events, enabling me to once video tape him in his airplane, starting it, taxiing and later flying overhead.

A former County Commissioner, legislator and community leader, he was well liked and honored in the community and will be well remembered, I am certain. And by all accounts, an honorable man.

Clean Up Your Own Mess, Lazy C

by lewwaters

Boris ColumbianThe Lazy C’s In Our View editorial for today, Jan. 22, 2016, “Clean Up Your Mess” addresses pollution being cleaned up in Hazel Dell, a problem discovered several years ago when chromium was found in our water.

Of course, in usual Lazy C fashion, they present it as how evil and irresponsible businesses are, even though if memory serves me, the company operated under regulations in place at the time, but new regulations passed put them in a violation.

I can’t help but feel this is just another of their more subliminal stabs against the proposed Oil Terminal that may be constructed at the Port of Vancouver.

Lefty Lou, Thankful but Worried?

by lewwaters

Brancaccio FiatAfter Lefty’s usual token Thanksgiving editorial and the praise of his beautiful daughter, we see nothing of any real value. He should have stuck with praising his daughter and just left it at that.

But that is not Lefty as he tries to convince what few readers he still has of his relevancy. A relevancy he seems worried about.

I say worried because of you drop down to the end of his screed you read, “It’s true, we don’t have as many print readers as we used to. But when you include our social media numbers, it’s actually pretty close.”

It doesn’t dawn on him that delivering such an inferior product as we see daily in the Lazy C, many former readers have left seeking objective, balanced reporting elsewhere, no longer buying the paper he writes for and manages.

How Long Has the Lazy C Ignored Illegal Lot Sales by the County?

by lewwaters

Dems, BlindersQuite a shocking revelation was posted on County Commissioner David Madore’s facebook page recently. It seems that the county has been auctioning off property to unsuspecting citizens that they cannot do anything with and end up stuck with.

For all of the excessive verbiage printed by the Lazy C against the so called “M&M Boys,” Commissioners Madore and Mielke now comprising the Republican majority of the 3-person commission, I find not one mention of this practice that apparently has been ongoing for several years in Clark County.

Where we are treated to frequent denunciations of the majority voters chose in the 2012 election as well as ridicule whenever Lefty Lou Brancaccio feels like it, they remain mum on the ongoing efforts by the majority to make much needed corrections where citizens have been getting hurt for so long.

Lazy C Launches Their Paywall

by lewwaters

An analogy of the Lazy C, Southwest Washington’s supposed newspaper, launching a paywall in order to read or comment to head off another financial failure.

It would be easier to just be objective, but that appears to be too difficult for them to understand as they continue chasing away prospective subscribers.

Despicable Lefty Lou

by lewwaters

Lou Brancaccio CountApparently not content that the absolute lie created and perpetrated that much maligned County Commissioner David Madore was pulling strings in the last city election, Lazy C editor Lou Brancaccio now seems to feel the need to extend his demeaning verbiage to outgoing City Council member Jeanne E. Stewart in his latest screed.

Actually, “screed” might be too diplomatic, absolute piece of filthy garbage might be more accurate as his entire Saturday, November 23, 2013 editorial seems to be more an effort to rub Ms. Stewart’s nose in the mud over losing the election, after it was the Lazy C promoting the provable lie of Madore pulling strings.

Showing what a complete asshole he really is, Brancaccio uses his screed to boast of his confronting Ms. Stewart after the City Council meeting, since she did not provide words he apparently decided she must say during the meeting.

Lazy C Promotes Forward Vancouver Lie

by lewwaters

Columbian FishwrapThe hatred of David Madore and anybody opposed to the Columbia River Crossing light rail project is no longer being hidden by the Lazy C. It never really was, but it has become more blatant than ever as we see ‘crack’ reporter Stephanie Rice, thought by many to be an understudy of vitriolic, bombastic John Laird, pushing an ad put out by Forward Vancouver, a PAC set up solely to promote our lying incumbent mayor, Tim Leavitt.

Attack ad against Turlay emphasizes Madore

While there is little doubt Rice would say she isn’t actually promoting it and is merely reporting on it, nowhere does she engage in any actual journalism of pointing out the lie of the ad, David Madore not being who is behind Bill Turlay.

While Mr. Madore no doubt supports Bill Turlay, nowhere on Turlay’s Public Disclosure Commission report will you find any donation by David Madore, his company or his family.

Lazy C: Whitewashes, Bias, Sell Out and Bankruptcies

by lewwaters

01I am left amazed how a flip-flop after lying your way into office brought out condemnation after the 2009 mayoral election, but is today being whitewashed by the Lazy C. Yes, for all the praise, ass-kissing and erecting a flimsy pedestal to place Tim Leavitt on today, the Lazy C wasn’t so pleased when he defeated ex-mayor Royce Pollard by nearly a 7-point margin.

In their endorsement of Pollard in 2009, the Lazy wrote of Leavitt, “has nowhere near the leadership capabilities that Pollard has,” describing him as “shallow, defensive and retaliatory” over a report issued by “the Vancouver Firefighters Union that Leavitt missed voting in 16 elections in 10 years.”

In the fashion we see continued today, Leavitt whined, “How does this sleazy maneuver help our struggling communities today?” The Lazy C then answered, “It exposes as delinquent the voting habits of a man who is courting Vancouver’s voters, and reasonable voters don’t see truth-telling as a sleazy maneuver at all.”

Courting ex-mayor Pollard some months after the election drew word that Leavitt had “duped the citizens of America’s Vancouver” and “checked his honesty and integrity at the door somewhere way back down the line … people bought that bull … this was a campaign based on a lie.”
