A Luau in Honor of the “Greatest Generation”

by lewwaters

Tiki 1December 7, 1941, the “date that will live in infamy” marked America’s entrance into World War II, what was to become the bloodiest conflict in recorded history that saw over 16 Million Americans putting on the uniform of one of the various branches making up our Armed Services.

When the world needed them the most, these men & women answered the call to fight a tyrannical enemy on the battlefields, in the air and on the open seas, prevailing four years later after over 400,000 of their number lay dead with another 670,000 wounded.

Five years later, 1950, many answered the call again to stand against another enemy to freedom in the small country of Korea, joining the younger men & women until a cease fire was signed 3 years later.

Concerts for a Cause ~ The Cause is 4 Vets

by lewwaters

Vet Camas Dog Tag 4 Summer was a little late coming this year, but it is here and with it come our summer activities. Swimming, hiking, sprucing up our yards or what have you, we get outside, shake off the winter doldrums and enjoy the summer.

Along with our personal activities come community events where we choose to gather around a common theme, compare our labors or just enjoy some fine entertainment, often for a small admission price to fund a favored charity.

We in the Pacific Northwest are very fortunate as we have an abundance of extremely talented people who lend their talents to causes in benefit of others and put on some great shows. We also have some really great causes they choose to get behind and support.

Regular readers know of this blog’s strong support of the Clark County Veterans Court that assists deserving Veterans with readjusting from war footing back into civilian society by promoting events organized in support of the Veterans Court.

Celebrate Independence Day Helping Deserving Veterans

by lewwaters

Fireworks 2Independence Day, more commonly referred to as the Fourth of July is our oldest and most celebrated holiday, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 and subsequently winning independence from Great Britain in 1783.

Originally expecting it to be adopted on the 2nd, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail on the 3rd,

“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Due to debating and revising some wording, the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted on the 4th and we have celebrated our Independence ever since, pretty much as John Adams expected us to.
